I might be buying a new bass soon. I have been playing bass for about 1.5 years, 2 years in June. I have an Ibanez GSR200. I think I have settled on the Aerodyne Jazz. Its Japanese made, lightweight, P/J pickup setup, cool design and finish, etc. My question,- tomorrow morning, i plan on going to Guitar center. I went yesterday, but they didn't have any in stock at my store. They have one about 90 miles away from where I live though, new, it is listed as IN STOCK on the GC website for 799$. I might be able to get it a bit cheaper. Should I negotiate? Anyway, the main question, should I go get the new one for 800 or get a used one in very good/like new condition for cheaper? I have not played the Aerodyne, and i wanna play it before I buy it. It's like buying a used car, you want to know what is wrong with it before you buy it. What benefits do I get of buying a new one for 800$? Any sort of warranty or support from Fender? If I bought a used one though I could upgrade the pickups and bridge. If I upgraded the pickups, I hear the SD Quarter Pounders are good. And a Badass II bridge.

Play it first. Personally I did not like the Aerodynes at all because they did not have any punch or growl. I like to feel the bass vibrate and these did not do that. Go play a few basses to see what you like. Make sure to try a G&L.

I like them personally, but they need new pups. They also need from position markers. I was lost with only having side ones.
Frankly, if I was going to buy a P/J Fender new today, it would be a Duff McKagan sig. I like Jazz Specials, and I don't like active P/J basses. I like certain active basses (StingRays, Bongos, Warwicks), but not active Fenders. But this is highly subjective.

I was planning on upgrading the pickups. I don't really care about front position markers, to be honest, because when I am looking at the neck I don't look at the very front fretboard directly most of the time.
If you find one used, the advantage would be the ability to sell for the same price you bought it for if you decided it wasn't a keeper.

I didn't really care for the quality for the price either. You may be able to score something American if you go the used route. I see what you're saying about trying before you buy, but the folks on here are pretty honest and the TB classifeds can't be beat. Just my .02.
