Fender J Bass Crafted in Japan 1997

Hey fellas,
I'm thinking about buying me a Fender Jazz, it's crafted in Japan and the serial starts with V (which is odd, since V is used for the Made in Japan - prior to 1997).
It's a real beauty imo:

(click the smaller images for a full view. also, isn't the "Fender" logo too pale? is it the normal CIJ J-bass headstock (the writings and stuff)?)

The dude says it's from around 97 and wants 550$ for it (incl. a gig bag and a new set of strings), is it worth it? Says he didn't play it much too.
I'm a guitarist but I just can't resist a Japanese beauty (Also, I planned on getting me a bass for a while now) so I think I should go for it.
I'd like to see your opinions about the guitar - is it worth the price? and also - isn't the serial odd? I mean a V serial on a CIJ? V were MIJs...

Yeah, I mean, it's not the deal of a lifetime...honestly, you could find that same bass on ebay 100 times for around that price.

It's a good bass though, I had a CIJ 62 RI that I just sold because I didn't play it very much. I definitely recommend putting in Fralin PU's and CTS pots, etc.

Is it really not that great of a deal? I thought it's a really good price.

To the Spinal Trapper - couldn't find the same one from the same year... Also, I've gotta pay like 150$ shipping and 15% taxes if I order from eBay... so...

Thanks everyone, haha, got it in the end for 480$ including a nice digital metronome+tuner and a new set of strings (the guitar has a new set of strings on it too), and of course a gig bag.
It's in an extremely good condition! No corrosion whatsoever, no dings, just 1 place on the side where there's a "hole" in the finish which opens a nice view to the wood underneath lol, nothing major though.
Will post pics in a few hours! :)
