Fender Jaco Pastorius: More than to play Jaco's songs?

I really dig Jaco, but do you think that his Fender Signature (not the Custom reliced) is usable to play more genres like hard-rock, AOR, Stoner, Pop...? or is too foccused to play what Jaco used to play?

Short version: Is it a versatile bass?

I think it'd be as versatile as any other fretless jazz bass could be...

I owned one and used it for about everything from touring with my bluegrass band in China( couldn't really travel an upright) to blues, rock, country.
If you're comfortable with fretless, they don't have to sound "overly fretless" unless you want it to.

So, given that, if you'd be comfortable with a 60's type jazz bass for your work, yeah, it's a great axe. You can get them with frets, if ya like.

No. Its so focused that in fact, if you even attempt to play anything that Jaco didnt...it simply wont. You will not be able to convince the instrument otherwise. Its either Jaco, or nothing.


Sorry i couldnt resist. I've never played one, but as others have said. Its a fretless Jazz bass, id be surprised if it couldnt do everything just fine.

At the end of the day it's still just a fretless jazz bass. You can play whatever genre you want on it, a signature bass is for the look primarily more than anything. Geddy Lee has/had a Jaco Jazz, he made it sound pretty cool with some RUSH tunes. So yes the bass would be quite versatile IMO.

I love my jaco tribute bass. I can barely play any of his tunes but I use it for my own style of playing. As long as your intonation is on spot you can make it sound like a fretted bass or a fretless. Its basically a 62 reissue with jacos name on the neck plate

Would it be sacrilege to put a fretted neck on one of these and have the flexibility to go back and forth? I welcome the jokes, but would also like a serious answer. Would a 62 AVRI jazz neck work to do this?
