Usually:

MIA > MIJ/CIJ > MIM > Squier

But IMO, its:

MIA > MIJ/CIJ > MIM = Squier

MIM is significantly better than Squier IMO. And I think the reason to produce MIAs if MIJs are as good but cheaper is simply that Fender will make more money off of an MIA.

I think the way to approach this is to assess how the instrument feels to you, then look at where its made and the price and read the usual reviews. I had a gig last night with my newly acquired Road Worn P (MIM) and it was really awesome. So easy to play. When I got this I sat in the store and played every P bass they had and this won over many more expensive ones including all the MIA. I suspect the build quality of these MIMs is better than others Ive tried, so it may change people's conceptions of quality and build location. There is no doubt that some of the cost of a MIA must be the additional labour costs. I've also got a Gretsch Thunderjet thats MIJ, it has superb quality of finish. Wouldnt hestitate to buy MIJ/MIM if the instrument felt and sounded right.
