fender jazz bass necks

I *think* you only have problems when you're trying to put a Japanese neck on an American/Mexican body or vice versa, or putting a Squier neck on a Fender body or vice versa. I know American and Mexican parts are 100% swappable.

i have a 2006 MIM P body and i tried my Geddy Lee neck and it would'nt fit, just a hair too big. i got a 2011 MIA Jazz neck which is off of a Highway One and it fit perfectly. so i think BillMason has it right. only problems are Japanese parts with American/Mexican parts.

I've swapped necks to every combination. There will always be a minute variation in size due to the imperfect nature of paint and sanding tolerances. If you happen to get a neck that's slightly larger and a socket that's slightly smaller, it might need some help. I have had to enlarge a neck socket slightly with a bit of sandpaper one time, but that's it. Conversely I've had combinations where the neck and body mated very easily. They are all supposed to be the same size.

I put a Squier CV Pbass neck on a 77Pbass without any problems or having to do a setup.

They are all interchangeable. Japanese, Mexican, US, Allparts, Warmoth, Musikraft, USA guitar craft, Squier, P or J. Pickguards vary depending on country of manufacture, but the neck joints are the same.

I don't believe that is correct. Standard MIM's and MIA's are perfectly interchangeable; as for Squier...I've seen and had personal issues. Not sure why. As for Japan - I believe they measure it metrically so there is a very slight difference.

IME, pretty much this.
