Fender Jazz Bass Special - Circa 1984-87

I really don't have extra cash for more basses, I am swamped at 10+ basses in a small apartment but........I put in a bid for the white JBS and got it!

Upon hearing the values of a white one being $500-$700 I began to look.I have had many JBS basses , some in the metallic red, a pink, a stripped white one etc. Most of these or all actually were found at under $350 but they were not very clean and I never had the all black or black and white like I wanted.

The white one had a super high shipping price of $120. I put in a low bid because of this. I ended up getting it for $355+Shipping. The seller then asked for my zip code and said shipping would be $85 not $120, thus I got the bass for $440 shipped. I am pretty happy with that as I almost bought one here the other day for $600 but it sold before I had funds together.

This one although it looks just like Duff's bass and has the 3 way switch it is labeled a PJ Bass, I am guessing it must be one of the last PJ basses before it switched to the JBS title.

The red one I got a page back is labeled PJ bass but it doesnt have a 3 way switch, making me believe its a 1984 and the white a late '84 or '85. There is no history on these basses really so thats all a guess.

The white one I just got

Here is the red one I ordered as well, notice no 3 way switch.

Thanks! this has been a bass I have watched for on ebay since 2006 , obviously some have come up since then lots of them actually. They are not super rare but I was on a mission to find a super clean, original and priced well one. I am sure I missed a ton, I never tried hard just casually bid.

I have already posted some fine basses for sale to make room for this one so its likely I wont be selling it especially after the desire to own one has been burning so long but the red one more the likely will be for sale as I dislike the color red.

It arrived this evening along with a hard case and new strings. 450€. Good deal here in Spain.

Some scratches and dents, a bit of mass noise but quite beautiful bronze-ish tone.

Very Nice Find! What is that metal plate on the back of the head stock?

It's a sticker with the name of a music store located in Barcelona [where it was bought for the first time I suppose]. The store is still alive and have website but the sticker is old, very old. They have the same address and phone number as it's written in the sticker!!

It reads:

Antiguos Almacenes de Musica
New-Phono
C/Ancha, 35-37 . Tel 315 13 61
BARCELONA-2

BTW... I've seen that the 3-way switch works in a odd fashion.

If one volume pot is at 0 position (neck or bridge pup) the switch central position acts like a killswitch, no output at all.

Is this the normal behaviour?

It also makes a bit of noise when switching (27 years old switch). Has Fender an original replacement for it?

Thanks.

Ouch.

So that red JBS I posted on this page I got from guitar center came and played great but the red was way to much for me and I had just gotten the white JBS also posted above.

I posted it for sale on craigslist and a guy came over it and loved it. He wanted to make sure it was 100% original. He kept asking its all original right? and I said yes it is. He said sweet and hands me the cash.

The he says yeah I am going to bring it to my guy and have him install a pickguard and different knobs:rolleyes:

So there is now one less JBS as this one will be drilled for a pickguard, it is his bass now so that's his choice its just a little sad as I love the no pickguard look.

At which point I would've said, "Can I buy the knobs from you or have them?"
