Fender Jazz Special 1985-89

Hi all,

I'm new to the forum. Does anyone have any info on the Fender Jazz Special (1985-89)? I'm looking to upgrade from a Peavey millenium ac-bxp. I saw one in a pawn shop and liked the feel and always wanted a Fender. Is it good for funk? I'm partial to finger-style and popping.

This was my dream bass back in the 80's because Duff from Guns'n'Roses played one. (Don't everyone laugh) The bass works well with all music styles, and would be fine for popping and great for finger-style playing. But as life went I never owned one (always broke in the 80's) try severl out loved them but ended up with a G&L SB-2 when I could finally afford a good bass. Fender just reissued the Jazz Special but for the price of a new one I would get a Highway one jazz or p bass as they are MIA not MIM like the reissue jazz special.

one of my best friends neighbors threw out a few instruments a few years ago and my friend took them. among them was a MIJ 80's fender power jazz bass in seafoam green with a black holographic headstock with p/j pickups. it definaly bas some mojo but in perfect playing condition. ive never seen another like it. if i remember correctly it has 4 knobs and a toggle switch. i once compared it to my fender MIM p deluxe active and it definatly had a more ballsy sound compared to mine but not by much. have any of you seen one like this? if so post pics. the next time im over at my friends ill try to take some pictures

I've played a fretless one at a GTG - it's a great bass! MIJ Fender is very good quality. Andy Fairweather-Lowe plays one when he tours with Roger Waters.

I have played a few. To me, they seemed like nice basses, but they weren't my thing. I played one with a painted neck that I was told was an early feature.

I had one in 86 or so; wish I still did. Great fingerstyle, great slap. The Power Jazz model referred to earlier was an active bass where the Special was passive. It used the TBX tone control which IIRC rolled off lows in one direction, highs in the other(from center detent).
