Fender Jazz

That bass is a Mexican Made Deluxe Jazz bass, AND I LOVE MINE. Great tone shaping, Well Balanced, and just an overall beautiful bass.

My 1998 Version of that bass is my Main Bass.

+1

I came to my Candy Apple Red monster as it was affordable. I figured I'd used it for a while until I could save up for another Precision. Not going to bother with that now. I love the many voices of this beast. The sole mod I'll be doing is cosmetic (I replaced the red tort scratchplate with a white pearloid) everything else will stay stock.

Yessir, I'm pulling for a jazz because I've read and heard for myself their versitilty. This thing will need to play everything ( which is alot to ask) from Motzart to Red Hot Chili Peppers to Pantera to Metallica.

I play all that kind of stuff, and my jazz is fine for it(and its just the standard MIM Jazz, no preamp)

jazz basses are really versatile

It's a good bass for the money. The MIA deluxe is a better product but it's about $600.00 more. I played one of those MIM Deluxe models for a couple days about a month ago and was impressed with it. It had nothing done to it other than a good set up and some DR Low Riders but everything else was stock. Played and sounded great through an Ampeg SVT 4 head and SVT410E Cabinet.

If you really want an active in that $600.00 to $700.00 price range. You may want to check out the Korean made Fender Jazz 24. I have had one of those for several months now and have been really happy with it. It has more tone capabilities with the three band EQ and also offers a 24 fret neck. It's about $80.00 - $100.00 more than the MIM Deluxe. It can be a little more modern sounding but it doesn't lose the "Jazz" tone. It's very "growly". The neck is slightly thinner than a standard jazz and the body is a little smaller to compensate for the 24 fret neck but it still looks and feels like a Fender Jazz.

I've got that bass - It's perfect for anything I've thrown at it - need to fix the intonation a bit though, I find the harmonics on the 3rd and 4th fret extremely hard to get out of it.

It's a really nice tone with the duncans too - perfect growly metal tone, as well as a really sharp soloing tone, without fiddling with the switch and knobs. looks amazing too.

I dont really know that much about jazzes though, I've only ever played 4, 2 of which were originals, one I own and the other was an American standard in a shop.

so yeah, I definately recommend you get one, which one you get is ultimately dependant on what you're gonna use it for - personally I couldnt live without the 24 frets, so I'd recommend that.

That place is nice and I'm a real fan of the Jazz you mentioned, I also like the 51' re-issue P-Bass, but thats for another time :smug:

I keep looking at that 60's that he has.....on the edge here. Perfect for a keep-at-work bass - I practice during my lunch hour w/a bass trainer.

A friend of mine has an Ibanez SR900 and he reccomends I get the SR500, difficult choice to make. oh well We're not going away until March but for a few festivals we play at I'd wanna be used to the basses sound and have a tone I know is good for each song.

This is my first thread since I came onto TB and I've been loving the community. I'm getting into the school band this year and we're going to a nation-wide school band competition a week full of music, lessons, performances. So I've decided to get a classic, a Fender Jazz both for the competition and other band purposes. Not any however this one is avtive and I'm digging the price of it, heres the link

Fender Delux Active jazz. I've got a few questions, why si this so cheap when it's American? Cheaper then the standard American jazz. Also if you've had any experiences with this bass could you please tell me the pros and the cons? I'm a big fan of this bass I'm just looking for a little input.

Thanks alot,

Terry

A good deal on a new MIM, a used CIJ are your best bet... I'd also spend some time on ebay.. Any bass you get, you'll want to budget $75 or so for a proper setup and maybe some new strings, and you're ready to rock! (or Jazz)..

Honestly, the most versital Fender in the MIM/MIJ price ranges, IMHO, is the MIM Reggie Hamilton Sig.

It has a 3 Band preamp with an active/passive switch, so you get both sounds. Its got the P/J setup so you have the option of getting the classic Jazz Bass bridge tone (my favorite, with the bass boosted its quite punchy, or with more treble and mids, with steel flats, you can get that classic Jaco upright tone), and then the tight, focused P bass tone. With both on you still get a good slap tone, especially with the preamp in it. To top it all off, it comes stock with a Hipshot D-Tuner, which allows you to downtune at the flick of a switch. All for around 800$.

I came close to getting one myself, but I didn't really have the need for all those options, which you do. I don't go active all that much, and when I do I've got my Cirrus 5. I don't really have a use for the P tone either, but I think it could serve you well in the Metal setting. Also, on my Highway One, I get the stock BadAss II bridge (the only Mod you could really justify on the Reggie) and the nitro finish which I prefer. Plus is says 'Made In the U.S.A.' on the headstock;) :D

you got some great advice here Terry, now I'll give you mine I have never been completely satisfied with any bass I bought via mail order. I've come close , and in a few instances only a minor adjustment or string change was required. However a few were total disasters. So my advice go to a music store with a fairly large inventory, play everything you can afford (avoid the ones you can't...that will make you crazy) then buy the one that you really love.

I agree. Support your local music store. If your bass (God forbid) should ever have any problems they should help you out with getting it fixed, that is if they are any kind of reputable shop. The bad thing about catalogues is you don't know if someone has bought the guitar kept for 28 days and returned it. OH yeah I would hop on it man. I have a standard MIM Jazz that I love!!!
