My Fender MIA Deluxe Jazz V batteries last only 1 month. I unplug everything when I'm not playing. I now don't even switch to active mode when practicing. Really a mystery.

Have you checked to see if the output jack may be wired incorrectly. Battery negative should be attached to the ring terminal of the output jack, so the sleeve on a mono TS cord completes the ground circuit. If the negative is attached to the sleeve then your preamp is never switched off. That would be the most likely cause.
