I have a Mod Shop Pbass and the '63 neck profile is amazing. When I play my Jazz Bass, it feels weird; the '63 neck feels like home now. And I used to be a Jazz Bass guy for 10+ years….

Fender Mod Shop: no J neck on a P body????!!!!

Had one of those. Not bad, bought it used but basically mint and flipped it a few months later for a $400 profit. I couldn't get along with the neck but had otherwise been playing 1.75" P necks around that time.
Also now have a 2013 Limited Edition American Vintage 60s Hot Rod PJ, which has a J width neck.
I prefer the modern B width P neck on the American Standards or the ones on the Pro and Pro II. I could see me looking for a P neck for a Jazz.
I used to , when I played 4's. Now I go for even wider necks - 1 7/8" wide 5'sSomething tells me I'm the ONLY person that puts a P neck on a Jazz body ....
I'm building a short scale 4 in the next month or so. J body, 1 3/4" wide neck.
I agree this topic comes up every so often here on TB, and I also agree that it makes absolutely zero sense that Fender doesn't offer J neck option for a P bass and vice versa in the mod shop. The mod shop is essentially picking the wood type and color of the body, then choosing the other parts off the shelf, if you will, to complete the package. They probably have stacks of J necks sitting right next to stacks of P necks - why would they not be able to offer either option neck for either bass style? I mean it really, really makes no sense to me.
I can think of solid sensible reasons that might be behind Fender choosing not to offer this flexibility, but I doubt people who are infuriated by it are likely to want to hear them, so.
Do tell. We'd like to hear what these reasons are besides marketing folks to the Custom Shop.
I'd rather not get involved in the argument tbh. But the possible reasons are there to be found, if you want them.
Mod Shop is a step below Custom. They probably don't want to crossover to the Custom Shop options. Silly? Yes, annoying? Sure. Just overcome on your own and make it happen.
Agree. They have inventory of P necks, and inventory of J necks. They have inventory of P bodies and J bodies. Unless they warehouse and store P bodies and necks in a completely different facility than the J bodies and J necks, it simply can't be a logistical problem. J and P necks use the same tuners, and fit either P or J body. It's not like asking for a square-end Tele neck on a rounded-end Strat body - they both fit.
And FTR I'm not upset about it, I don't own any Fenders and don't plan to order one any time soon, but it sure seems to me that that someone at Fender made a deliberate decision not to offer this option, and I'd be curious to hear the logic behind it. It's also one of the reasons I ordered a G&L JB instead of a Mod Shop Jazz a handful of years ago, but we all know that G&L isn't an option anymore...
The fender mod shop can't even make a 5 string J bass. I honestly struggle to see who their target market is for the mod shop with how limited their options are.
What do you think they can simply change the labeling on a jazz neck and bolt it on? Are you crazy or something?

I see you can get a PJ now. For years, that was not an option. Baby steps...
They used to when it was called the American design experience and I think initially when they changed to the MOD shop branding.
It does make sense from Fender's perspective. They are fully aware of what the most sought-after features are, and they carefully place them throughout their product lines. Combinations of everyone's favorite things are not available except for the custom shop. That's all there is to it.

I have one of 500. It is a great bass, but is quite rare, love it so much.
I also like the neck of Fender Am Pro pbass - C'63 profile. It is narrower than Am std pbass.
I mean let's be honest, the Mod Shop sucks. First thing I hate is the one headstock logo option, the worst one Fender makes. The bridge, etc. It's all just AM Pro stuff, the most boring Fender offering.
