So speaking of the JMJ road-worn in Daphne Blue, I finally got to pick one up today. It's a few years old. I was really surprised how different the neck is from my PJ -- it's noticeably thicker. It felt thicker to me than the P bass that I picked up next(this person has a collection).

I have to say, I prefer the PJ neck (smallish hands, short fingers). This solidifies my decision to upgrade it when I have the $ rather than opt for a more expensive Mustang. I really want to swap the toggle switch for a regular knob and maybe the pickups if that's a noticeable improvement (I'm okay with the stock P but the J is meh and hums too much for my taste).

Here are my twins. I treated myself to the shell pink P/J from CME last September for having lost a lot of weight since the previous year. The sonic blue one was purchased by a friend of mine afterward, but he doesn't care for short scale so I took it off his hands as part of a trade.

PS : You looked great at Woodstock.

I would love to take credit for that photo because if it was me I wouldn't be scrambling for gigs. Unfortunately it is not me it is Pete Townshend of The Who and immediately destroyed that SG after this pic was taken and threw what remained into the audience.
I can't take credit where credit isn't due, as much as I would like too.
As for humor it was a good one and made me laugh to the point where the nurses came running into my room with pain medication. It worked out on all sides. Talk at you soon.

My CIJ Mustang Bass doesn't really need one, but I've nonetheless thought that a color change might be fun....
Question is: how do I know that any replacement PG I order will be specifically for a CIJ Mustang? Seems like most of the companies out there who do replacement PGs don't specify one for CIJ models.

Go to WD Music, choose mustang in the pickguard section, then you will see a specific japan made version. They fit nicely, i've purchased 3 of them for my cij's.

Sadly, to be safe I think you’ll have to go custom and either do a tracing or send someone your pickguard as a reference. I’m not sure all years of CIJs were the same dimensions.

For what it’s worth, I went the custom route for the vintera and it went fine.

I stand corrected. I had the same issue with a duo-sonic guitar and vintera bass, so assumed that the CIJ was similar.

Welcome to TB. Looks like the new pink one is in for a string change. I have Chome flats on mine which sound great. I have the CME black/maple one. Wish I had waited for the lake placid blue.

Question for the Class, Does anyone know the specs of the pickups of the Mustang PJ pickups? Like what type of magnet, output resistance,etc, or if they're from a specific fender series. I can't seem to find any info on that. It always just says "Precision and Jazz" Pickup.

I've just read a few brief posts here and I see replacement pickups for the PJ mentioned frequently. I hear racing reviews about the Nordstrands, which I haven't tried, but I trust in. However, my experience with Aero's have been heavenly. Their Mustang Bass pickup is THICK sounding and has insane punch. I can't reccomend it enough, even if it is $170 (? - trying to estimate conversion rate, as it is £130 here).

So I just read about @Bobhmcs having issues with the tuners, and this is the first bass (out of probably 20-30) I’ve owned where I really felt the tuners weren’t great. But I’m curious anyone else who’s had a similar issue, was it the tuners or the nut? The nut doesn’t look bad, but I’m just wondering if the sticking and difficulty getting smooth turning is from that. I guess I should try some graphite.

Thanks. The shell pink 'Stang was going in for surgery. It now has a Seymour Duncan STK-J1b stack in the bridge. LaBellas were installed afterward. Chromes were on the sonic blue one when the pic was taken.

The lake placid blue was a contender, but I had to get the shell pink. I have 2 guitars plus that bass in shell pink. I love the old surfy pastels.

The link I added to my reply gives an explanation. I think of it as MIJ was one factory in Japan. CIJ was a different factory(ies). I always understood the quality of MIJ vs CIJ was similar.

Further, I have a guitar aficionado friend that swears by Tokai-made CIJ strats. He went through great lengths to get a CIJ strat manufactured for the Japanese market rather than intended for the US market. But he’ll admit that he has a hard time distinguishing with a blind “taste test.”

Having worked with Japanese “Kaizen” manufacturing, I have no doubt that most of what comes out of Japan is high quality.

I used to like the look of the clover tuners better. Maybe it was just what I expected mustangs to have. In any event, the lollipop tuners on the vintera make it unique and it’s what folks tend to notice first.
