Funny you should mention that. I played a Hofner Club on and off for several years without any issues but after a minor stroke almost two years ago it took about a year for my brain to re-educate itself sufficiently that my right hand could navigate the close string spacing on my Hofner. Very frustrating but I could still get around on instruments with considerably wider spacing until it did.

Even this isn't cause for too much alarm for me, as at this price, I feel l Iike it'd be a fine modding platform without worrying overmuch about longterm dollar value. And switching out pickups and bridge (I've become a big fan of the threaded saddles on my 50s Classic P so was gonna change that anyway) is completely reversible, so even that is not a concern.
First things first: come up with some money
That's exactly what I did with mine, changed the bridge, pickups, tuners, and wiring to VT VT with the 3-way switch. VERY happy with it. It's easier to play than my Performer, though the latter is a different animal and I don't like it any less. I just with they included the cut-aways like my '76 model. I like it! And it actually brings to mind a question for my impending ownership: how's using a pick feel on these (maybe on ss basses in general)? Does it get floppy with medium/light rounds, do I need to lift the action up, etc? Unless I'm working on Yes or Tool songs or something, I won't need to slam it, and if it just asks for tighter technique, I'm all for that.
I just tried it again to compare it to another bass. I'd never thought about that.
The pick feel isn't too different, though. The change in tension is only slightly noticeable. The strings fight less, but not by much. I have my mustang strung up with a set of GHS short scale rounds, which are a heavier gauge than normal, and they feel basically the same, aside from the obvious shift in scale length. I tried to set up the action like I have with my other basses (no measurements specifically, just as low as it's comfortable) and it plays really well!

I’ve found that fingerstyle and pick, you just need to lighten a little bit. If I turn the volume up higher than I’m used to, it forces me to play lighter which puts it in a good place.

Excellent choice, IMO.
I bought mine the last time they had that sale on the LE at MF and the local GC matched the price on the one they had just put out in the store. I consider mine to be one of the best sounding basses I've ever owned in over 50 years of playing. First things I did with mine was install tapewounds and replace the pickguard screws with black screws.
Keep your eye on CMEs website. It'll be back on sale again at $75 off ($499 instead of $574). The one I bought was $574, but went on sale for $499. When I was ready to buy, it was back to $574 - a week later was $499 and pulled the trigger!

Hello guys, I ordered a JMJ black cause I really wanted a short scale for my collection, I have seen tons of short scale basses lately and for some reason noting expresses vintage like the mustang.
I have never played a JMJ and I've read that some guys thing it sounds similar to the less expensive versions of mustang, just wanted to know what do you guys think.
I personally hate with passion the look of the PJ because to me the pickups look oversized, if they had the normal mustang p and a lipstick as a bridge pickup it would be a different story.
so I chose the JMJ based on the comments that the neck is chunky and sound s more traditional vintage and fat.
plus I'm assuming it comes with better hardware, I didn't really care for the regular tuners, a mustang in my opinion should have lolly pop tuners.
will be getting the bass in a week or 2 I'm hoping to be what I was hoping for.

nice im sure I will love it as I have been thinking o that bass for a long time, but I found odd that some people seems to think that the pj versions have a very similar tone.
at some pint I was thinking of getting one of those, and add a regular mustang pickup then some sort of vintage looking pickup at the bridge like an alumitone, thunderbird, or a lipstick it would complement the look.
Justin, who's very active on the other thread, worked with the Seymor Duncan custom shop to get the sound just right. it's pretty ballsy, don't think there's any need for a bridge pickup. FWIW, I recommend the medium scale Chromes.
I mean, I think all the vintage-style split coil pickups I've heard on P basses sound similar heh, and they're not going to put outright crummy pups in anything. You'll probably get a closer match to the vintage voicing in that JMJ than my solo'd neck pickup, and of course it's set in the cool cover.
I am thinking about matching a pickguard with a vintage-shaped neck pickup in the PJ, & likewise something for the bridge slot. I'm not nearly as hostile to the stock look as you are haha but it'd be very cool to nail that aesthetic with the classy finish.
