Just did some minor dremel work to make the truss rod access better for my Vintera Mustang and since I needed a pickguard to allow more room for adjustment, I of course went with tort....as you would. It's a American Performer Mustang guard from WD Music.

Anyone who actually owns a current Squier CV Mustang - a brief why you would or would not recommend purchasing one? I've got some points expiring at MF and a discount code so I need to make a decision pretty quickly. My past experience with short scales have been Jerry Jones basses and the current Gretsch Junior Jet II - all of which I like! I play with my thumb or a pick and lean toward 60's R&B, Roots Rock and Americana - no slapping and I generally roll the tone knob most of the way back on every bass I play :>) Thank-you!

I've got one. Posted about it towards the end of the thread.
The short story - it's got a string through body, so medium (or long) scale strings.
It's got a single pickup, so if you need versatility, it might not be your first choice.
I like the neck and general feel/playability of it.
Truss rod adjustment is at the neck - a plus for me.
They're not as good a deal as they used to be, but if you want a Mustang bass, they're the least expensive new option.
OK I pulled the trigger - white one to be delivered on Tuesday!
If numbers are still being given for the Fender Mustang club, I'd love to have one, if not, no worries.

I went ahead and emailed Hipshot, as it's been nearly two months with no word now.
Meanwhile, it's fun doing open mic jams, because singers like to open things up with calling solos for players. Turns out the lower tension of the scale lets me get a lot of different tones when spanking the strings; sure, all basses can get some extra burp when you dig in, but my long-scale basses just don't bark the way this puppy does, even with the P pickup solo'd. It's been my most-played-out instrument since about last fall.

Got my Mustang last night and its going back today :>( The bridge was installed crooked and there was a paint chip and the pickup output was super low and as others have mentioned the opening in the pickguard was so tight you could not adjust the pickup height - plus it weighed in at over 9 pounds 4 ounces - enough issues that I figured it was worth waiting for a better one so I'll try Sweetwater and smaller shops where they will pull them out of the box and examine them and set them up for you.
Too bad. I thought maybe the QC issues would be taken care of by now.
The first one I went to look at had a factory repaired paint blemish right on the front face about the size of a finger nail.
Stood out like a sore thumb.
Surprisingly, the one I ended up with was bought online, sight unseen, and has no issues.
The luck of the draw, I guess.

I got my Mustang PJ from Sweetwater and it was perfect. Unfortunately, it looks like they are completely sold out now though.
I was looking at getting a Squire JMJM guitar from Sweetwater, but they told me they'd be sold out for quite a while. So I found one on Reverb.com from a small shop that stated "All instruments from ______ are professionally evaluated and set-up in our historic ______ storefront prior to shipping. They didn't pack it real well but it was perfectly set up with absolutely no issues.
I'd really rather support a shop at this point.
@Robot.G Musicians friend - it was in the original box unopened from when it was shipped to them. I've gotten some great ones from MF but its hit or miss because they do not look at them. I bought a Gretsch Junior Jet II from Sweetwater and it was set up fine and packed well. I'm like you in that small shops and Sweetwater will be my source for instruments from this point forward.
@don21480 and @Robot.G, in addition to small shops and Sweetwater, I've had superb experiences buying from Chicago Music Exchange, specifically from Scott Tooredman who is the Bass Specialist. They have Mustangs in stock and they do excellent setups and their shipping is double boxed a la Sweetwater. They have a tight relationship with Fender and get custom colors as well.
It looks to me that the holes cut for the pickup halves on the black and tort guards are too large.
Aside from that I like the tort best.
Yes, I need to return them and have them send the correct size. The (UK) supplier advertised them as for an American mustang....but they seem to be the same size cut out as you would have for the JMJ mustang (which has bigger pick ups).
