The Squier - I like the neck radius and nut width combination better than the others and I wanted the traditional pickup. It plays and sounds great - pickups are lower output as expected so I was anticipating that but its not enough to be a concern and they are quiet. I bought it thru Reverb and did send the store a message on the same thread they told me it was 7 pounds 7 ounces but so far crickets. Comp me some cheaper Hipshot tuners and I'd be happy guys :>)

When researching tuners for my Ric 4001 last year, I found that the Hipshot Ultralites come in either 1/2" or 3/8" post diameter, but Gotoh Resolites only come in 3/8", IIRC.

My Ric would need the 1/2", like most traditional Fender basses do.

Are the stock strings on a Squier CV Mustang bass the same as D'Addarios Nickel Wound? They have those colored balls so I'm wondering since I have used D'Addario Nickel Wounds in the past on short scales and remember liking them better than these stock strings. Also I can't tell if the stock strings are really the right winding length or just long scale ones cut off?

Hello Mustang Club,

I'm starting to toy with the idea of changing out the factory flats on my JMJ. I really liked the sound when they were new, but now I'm finding it's starting to lose a bit too much high end attack for what I want out of that bass.
I understand that not all short scale strings will be suitable for Mustang through-body loading. Any suggestions on good strings for this bass? I'm thinking flats, but I really like playing this bass with a pick and favour a bright attack on top of a deep thud in the low end.

Also wondering if there are any tapewound options that'll fit a Mustang.

@NKBassman You might be a candidate for GHS Pressurewounds.

As I understand it, through-body bridge loading is best done with ordinary long-scale strings... so if you check out the Pressurewounds, you've got access to the medium-gauge set. Those will have tension & flexibility fairly close to the flats (vs my light-gauge ones, which spring like a rabbit's hindlegs), and can deliver a lot of different tones without being too bright for comfort.

@don21480 I think I recall consensus somewhere in these hallowed archives that the stock strings put on all the entry/MIM basses are in fact long-scale ones (Fender 7250ML, maybe?), and reportedly made by D'Addario and licensed to Fender. It could well be that you found similar ones, maybe slightly different gauge, and liked them. Also I could just misremember all of this, heh

Thanks for the suggestion! I used to use Pressure wounds on my P bass and really liked them.
