I've been carrying mine in a Levy's Deluxe series 200 guitar bag that used to be home to my defretted short scale SBMM Stingray. I've ordered a roadrunner highway for it. that bag is too short for the Mustang but evidently fits the Stingray. We'll see

I have a MIM Fender Mustang PJ.
I like to alternate from the P and J pickups (or P/J) quite a bit. As many have mentioned the stock Fender Jazz bridge pu is quite anaemic. I don't dislike the tonality or timbre of the Jazz pu but the volume weakness is just so annoying.

I've now tried swapping the stock pu for a Tonerider Jazz Plus bridge pu and I'm quite impressed. Big sound to match the P! The quality of the build is also much, much better despite the budget price. Toneriders get pretty good reviews for a cheap pu maker.

I don't play a Jazz so I'm not really familiar with the Jazz pu sound but I really like the Tonerider in J and PJ mode so far.

Has anyone swapped their Mustang PJ's Jazz pickup? I know lots of folks have swapped the P pus but I've not heard much about alternatives for the Jazz.

I replaced the pups on an Ibanez Mezzo and put a Dimarzio Ultra Jazz in the bridge position. Sounded great and balanced nicely with a P pickup plus was hum free. I would highly recommend it as a possible choice.

I have a Seymour Duncan SJB-2 Hot Jazz Bridge PU in my PJ Mustang. I use Hum-Cancelling Split coils in my full scale PJs, but I had this Seymour single left over from an earlier project and thought I'd put it in temporarily. I use a stacked CTS pot wired Vol/Vol for all my P/Js so I can set unity gain; and I use a single “master” tone pot. I went ahead and ordered a Nordstrand NJ4SV, but haven’t been motivated to install it yet, as the Seymour sounds good at home, but I haven’t played it out yet. The combination of the “P” with the Hum-Cancelling pickups in my others give a big fat tone blended, and the H/C “J” sounds “Jazzish” when soloed, but not true single coil. I don’t really care for the blended sound of the true single, but it DOES sound like a Jazz bass soloed.


My PJ Mustang. Standard Fender 0056003000/0056004000 Precision set, as used on the Classic, Roadworn, and Highway One basses since 2006 or so. Great pickups IMO. And the Seymour:

Recently bought a MIM PJ Mustang from Craigslist. I absolutely needed a hardshell case so it can play nice with my other gear in the back of the car. I bought a Baritone guitar case from Rondo Music via Reverb, a Douglas EGC-200 EXP case. The shipping from Reverb was cheaper than from Rondo's site. The case fits like a glove and was only $99 plus $20 shipping. However, this case is so cheaply built, it might dissolve by just looking at it. We will see starting tomorrow how it stands up to the real world.

I have an American Performer Mustang with maple neck, and I told my wife I wanted one of each one day. American Performer with rosewood neck (coming soon), Vintera, MJM, Player and Squire Classic Vibe. And maybe the MIJ, can't afford a real original one.

She told me it was cheaper than collecting Mustang cars. Maybe today is a good day for buying basses.

Which pickup do you prefer? And how do you feel about either of them?

I'm in process of updating my CV Mustang and currently thinking about going all the way and having it routed for a Serek LZ B90 but I could be convinced otherwise.

I really like them both! I have not a-b them as one bass has rounds and the other has flatwounds. You might find some tone samples on youtube
