Fender Necks

Is there any comprehensive data on fender necks over the years? G+L has a number system It'd be cool for the sake of comparison to have the data for fender. Or have the j and p basses been the same depth, shape and radius forever?

They have three widths, A (1.5"), B (1.625") and C (1.75") but the radii and depths have changed over the years.

I've also seen a Japanese Fender Precision with a nut width of 40mm. That would put it right in the middle of a Jazz and Precision (A & B). Anybody know of an American equivalent with that profile?

Well, the Japanese Fenders are listed at 38, 40, and 42mm, their equivalent A, B, and C necks. I have an American 70's RI P neck and a Japanese 70's RI P neck and they feel identical to me. I don't think the 38, 40 and 42mm are exact measurements, but a metric way to sell A B and C necks.

Its shaved down. Even his original '72 was modified, and had a shaved down neck. But the Original Poster wasn't referencing a Fender Geddy Lee Jazz Bass. He's talking about G&L, the company Leo Fender formed sometime after selling the Fender and Music Man companies. It has a number system that tells the size of the neck on each instrument.

How about Depth's? I know the 70's p-basses were very chunky, even on the b neck's. A 64 jazz had a thinner neck than the 62 re-issues we see today, but I haven't been able to play the custom shop 64, they where more like a 70's A neck, but not as thin as a geddy. Does that sound right?
