yeah the sr500 is a very aesthetically pleasing bass and I will be sure to try one out

I have an SR500 and really like it. It has amazing balance and the neck is super fast. The mahogany body an oil finish is really nice. My only complaint is that the frets are a little rough on the edges but not a big deal really. A great bargain for $600 new. I chose it over a Fender Mexican Jazz which didn't seem to offer as much although I do love the tone of a Jazz bass.

No it won't! I've got Fender basses and I hate the necks (except for my Squier PJ 5er) and the tone is so old school. They are heavy. My Ibby's are thin, fast, amazing fat modern tone, active and are THE classic modern bass sound. Fender can only DREAM about being that up to date. Cripes they don't even sell a 5 string PJ! Talk about being stuck in the past! But if stuck in the past is what you want then nothing beats the Fender. In that case it hauls gravel and picks up (mature) chicks!

I note that these threads always bring out the Fender fanboys. Personally, I love my Fenders and my Ibbys for what they can do, but my main axes are my fretted/fretless G&L L2500s.

Woah Dude! Didn't you see the little green rolling on the floor laughing head? I was simply making a joke based on the previous post. However, now that I think about it, the Fender P will hall gravel, pick up chicks, and smash your Ibby to smithereens.

I'd personally never buy another Ibanez. Never been impressed. But, that's me. These two basses are completely different basses and you should really just play both of them (if possible) and pick the one that feels and sounds right for you.

Same here. Only had a Jazz at the time. Now I have both. Still single.

Hardly different. Except for the highlight on the pickguard and the Drop-D tuner, it's bone stock. But now you've piqued my curiosity…tell me, what body and neck type was the one you played, Jazz or Precision? For the sake of reference, here's the two Blacktop models straight from Fender's website. If it wasn't either of these, it may have been either a modded item or another model altogether.

I know I've seen pics of Fender P/J's with Precision bodies and the bridge pickup is a humbucker instead of a single-coil jazz pickup, but I don't know what their exact designation was.

Maybe I'm mistaken with what I remember; I'll see if I can't get by the shop again and see if they still have it to check. I thought it was a P with stacked J pickups and P's in the neck, but I could very well be misremembering.
