Fender Original or Copies?

I'm not throwing hate!

I think I pretty well understand your question. I think you see things as an upgraded copy rather than a unique instrument using the same basic design platform. I do not think you're saying they are not worth the money- just 'if you're spending the money why not get something that looks as different as the features suggest.'
That puts is perfectly. An Upgraded Copy!!! :hyper:

Ok. I know I am going to open up a big can of worms here, but what the hell. QUOTE]

Definitely not hate ..... but, let's face it, you knew what was coming :D
Very much so. I just do not want anyone to think that I am against people who make their own basses. I applaude them :D .. I revel in the fact that we are able to have a discussion like this. We are incredibly lucky to have enough options we can discuss classic shapes as a need or want!!
I have to say ~~~~ "I LOVE AMERICA" ~~~~

Why? Are there certain countries that do not allow their citizens to talk about prices of bass guitars?

I do not know about other countries. Just ours and I think that it is pretty great to be here. Don't you?

Uhhh.....sure. I don't think I'd get all excited and proclaim the USA a great place because we can talk about bass guitar prices. Is it prohibited in other parts of the world? It's not like we have some exclusive right to talk about bass prices while other nations governments imprisons it's citiznes for mentioning the price of a Fodera or Valenti.

There's someone playing a $99 bass that thinks that'll keep them happy for a long time and that you paid too much for the Fender name on your MIM.

That's Fantastic for you! as long as you're happy...

"Beauty IS in the eye of the beholder" after all...

I wanted a Fender, I got it, and TRUST me, it took me a long time to decide to spend EVEN that much money on it... I know a lot of you are laughing about that, but hey, like I mentioned before, I simply cant justify some basse's pricetags... some are just downright ridiculous.

I took a 3 month hiatus and went to North Korea, knocking door to door to ask residents to sign petitions for "Democracy Now!" and "Talkbass: freedom of expression/treble sucks".

US emissaries now are trying to negotiate my release from a prison camp in the North Korean jungles. However, one of the guards and I got into a debate over which onboard preamp is better: Sadowsky or the North Korean Fission dual band U235-Pu94. Uh oh...time's up, back to my bamboo cage.

We need to petition the president today, Jim S needs to be freed from his korean cage! The right to talk about the prices of basses without harassment is a fundemental right. I fore one have detected a subtile increase in political correctness when it comes to this subject even on this forum, obviously this is the work of unemployed Dean bloggers who resent my ability to achieve a Sadowsky with my hard work, or maybe eliteist friends of Teressa Hienz who think that only people in the Hamptons should be able to afford Sadowskys (this is true with ecspecially multiple sadowskys owners). So I say to all Talk bassers RISE UP Talk abouit the prices of basses, express your individuality, Liberals hate this, buy a Adler sub-contra 24 string gary goodman special or sadowsky 5 anniversery special with some rare tropical expoited country wood top, after all this is America!!! And to all our friends on the continent , feel free to join in, unless your name is Jacque Chirac, I would love to hear your opinion about bass prices!!!!!! In fact I think the best thing we could do for Jim is to go to our favorite bass shop today and buy an exotic bass for a friend. Kinda of a protest against tyranical regimes that forbid talking about bass pricing. I heaby declare today 2/2 NGOABYFAEBD national go out and buy your friend an exotic bass day. And for all of you TB'ers who don't have a friend My address is......................................

I digress. Being an American and having all of our freedoms is something that some of us hold dear. Being able to have our TalkBass, IMO, is a good thing. Commy Basturds  The difference between a J/P Original and a Copy is for each player to decide. Nothing more. :scowl:

I still feel that if you want a J buy a J.

What if I wasnt a J with P pickups by Nordstrand and a preamp by Aguilar and 5 strings and an asymetrical neck and a Pau ferro fretboard, and a quick release bridge, and ultralight tuners, and I dont want to wory that the neck will be poop in a few weeks?

Im getting what I want from the place I can get it.

Hi!

I agree with Mark Beem. Buy what u like and be happy with it. Im exhausted reading posts about guys and gals who constantly say certain gear isnt worth the $. It is worth the $ to the individual who shelled out the cash, otherwise they'd buy the same old bass everyone else does. Thats what makes the world go around.

By the way, why is a J bass only worth a certain amount of $ and a custom shape worth more? This baffles me. Is a custom shaped bass warrant a higher price? Mind boggling to me

Rob
You know what bikeplate,I was always thinking the same thing.I mean I know that they may have all the fancy woods, and all that but jeez,

I am not making the comment that the basses are any more or less quality. I Like the work that you are doing. As a matter of fact, I prefer it to "stock" basses.
My question points in the direction of this - If you want a J - Why not buy a J? Why the hundreds of dollars difference for virtually the same thing. It is not an angry question or a heated debate. Just a very confusing issue for me. . I look at a lot of these "CUSTOM" basses and they virtually look excatly like 'Factory" made basses. My question is if you want a Custom buy a custom. Why buy a copy for sometimes thousands more?

I want to let everyone know I can appriciate all of the people out there making their own instruments and it is a wonderful thing. I own 3 customs myself. I do not want to diss on anyone in the least bit. I appologize if my comment was taken wrongly. :(
now this is only my opinion, and my experience with different Jazz basses,1st of all the ones that I did get to try Sadowsky,Lull, and Moon only had one thing in common which was that they only favored each other in looks to a certain degree, but they all had thier on voices. To be honest with you none of them sounded like a Fender, (maybe the Mike lull was close) but they all sounded good.all though the 3 I mentioned were expensive,I did get to play a custom shop Jazz from Fender that was FOR REAL that had a $4700.00 price tag. ! so it just reaffirmed to me that no matter who makes the bass, if it's a custom job, then the piper has to be paid.

p.s. this is a good thread guys

Doesn't it just come down to simple economics?

And the world of music is demand driven, not supply driven. Therefore, if a customer is willing to pay a certain price, then the supplier will provide it, at that price.

Are custom basses worth it? Yes and no...it all depends on your PERCEPTION of worth. Everyone is different and willing to pay different prices for different products, therefore different products are available at different prices...each to his own...

Now with that said...Does anyone know where can I get my hands on a mint condition '51 P-bass for under $1000? ;)
