IMHO, even the Lakland Skylines feel a lot like a broken in Fender. I have a 44-02, as well as Jazzes and PBasses

This - best of both worlds. I have a Fender P/J, built in '97, that's very cool. Why choose? P/J's rule!!
You must come from the land of lak?![]()
Why choose? P/J's Precisions rule!!
Funny, I just ran across another import Fender "clone" that sells for Fender MIA prices.

Depends, you do want to play jazz, or play with precision?
That's cool. Skylines can be bought used, too.True...unless you get it used. For a MIM price. And yes I did...

Fender Js and Ps are so different that you'll need two of each: one with rounds in the finish of your choice, and one in the official TB-approved finish (sunburst with a tort guard). The TB-approved P will need flats, no matter what sort of music you're playing.
Get out your wallet.

but what if the OP wishes to play precise jazz?

If it were me, i'd go play a bunch of Fender Standard P's & J's at your local shop... their not difficult to find. If one "speaks" to you, get it.
If you want a truly "world class" instrument, i'd look for a used US Lakland 44-60 or 44-64. I firmly believe that used US Lakland's are some of the best deals to be had in existence. Wonderful instruments.... truly!!!
Skyline's are excellent instruments as well. If you can find some to play, make sure you do.
