Fender Postmodern Precision Basses

Hey everyone,

I'm thinking of picking up a Postmodern P from the Fender custom shop, love the idea of having a J neck on a P body as well as all of the other little tweaks they've given the design.

Has anyone here had the chance to play one and compare it to a vintage (preferably pre-cbs) Fender? Does it get in that ballpark, or is it a totally different animal? Also, prices seem to vary wildly online when buying new, I've seen anything from $3k - 4k! How much do you think is reasonable to pay?

Hi Applerocks, I've had the postmodern P for about 6 months now. it's a killer. Vintage tone, great midrange.
The neck is very similar to my pre cbs 61 jazz I've had for many years. Very close, jazz neck is a little thinner front to back, width almost identical. The Postmodern P is physically very smooth. Hard to explain, it just feels great. The only thing that bugs me is the truss rod adjustment, needs a screw driver which tends to scar the pickguard. I prefer the wheel like Musicman and Sadowsky. Other than that for me it's perfect. My main player definitely. Seriously thinking of downsizing because this really is that good.

Owned one for a short time and only gave it up because I wanted a wider neck...I thought it was fantastic though and was definitely on par with a '65 P I owned years ago that had a pickup made in '63 in it...all of the mods make perfect sense and it's a very nice, very comfortable bass to play...

I'm curious about that important caveat you noted.. In the area where the Jazz pickguard ends and the neck 'butt' begins, is it that tight where the screwdriver has to be jammed in there? I can see why that would be a problem alright. Any chance of first prepping with painter's tape on the pickguard ("scratch plate" for our UK members) or some tape just behind the tip of screwdriver itself? You probably went through all of that already though.. Thanks.
