fender precision 1966

someone just gave me a 1966 fender precision bass in black with a 1959 maple neck. is this worth anything? i was hoping to get a gibson elvis dove($2000) if the bass is worth anything. thanks :hmm:

Oh man, if you have to ask that question you don't deserve the bass!

Kidding... I'm just really envious of you.

A 66 body/59neck?
Vintage Fenders have been crazy for a long while, it's hard to believe someone knowing it's a 66 body and 59 neck would just give it away. But anyway....
Well, the bass could be worth 3500-4000 bucks, but you have to disassemble the bass and to check and guarantee all the parts are real vintage fender parts, and that the body and neck are the year they claim to be, and verify the finishes are original or repaints.

Naahhhh, that thing's junk. Give it to me and I can take away the shame of you having to throw it away.

Just look on ebay and you will see some early 60's Fenders going for some crazy money. But like already mentioned, the condition and authenticity plays a huge role in determining the worth.

Your bass not being all original it will go for a lot less, but if it is "a player" you should be able to cover that Elvis git-tar and then some.

Dare I say this on talkbass, but if you want maximum coinage you may be able to sell the neck and body separately. If it is a good playing/sounding bass that would be a shame though.

Intrigued,

Who gave it to you?

and how did you know the exact ages of its bits?

Post a pic and if it's as you say, I will swap you a dirty 1962 P-Bass in Bad condition with flatwounds and some weird carvings on the neck that my local antique dealer gave me as part of a job lot.

a Gibson Dove yuck learn to play bass!!!!

The Gibson Dove has a top that is way to thick and doesn't sound that good. Elvis wasn't know for his guitar playing ability. Want a serious acoustic talk Martin, Taylor, Guild (in the old days).

i have to agree with chunk-o-funk. sell the two halfs sepratly. the 59 neck is definatly an upgrade for the bass, but thats if your keeping this one as a player. theres a market for pre cbs spares (the 66 body two). remember these basses of this era are 45 years old, and although some people keep thier bass' well there are others that show thier age and need spares. its up to you, but don't sell it as one instrument. keep it as a player (i imagine it will be really good), or sell in two halves
