Fender Precision Bass Player or (MIM) Standard

The pick ups are my biggest concern, but the general consensus sounds in favor of the Player.

Yeah, the stock Player pickups are better IMO

I somewhat agree with this on the older ceramic MIM pickups, but this is a misplaced concern on the Players Series. The pickup is one of the easiest components to make on a P bass, and the new version on the Players Series is made just like the American pickup with Alnico pole pieces, so it is going to sound exactly like a Fender Precision There is just not going to be that much difference swapping pickups around if you are using the same basic design/parts. If you don't like a basic Alnico Precision pickup, maybe try a Dimarzio Model P or an active EMG for a real difference. Most people would get a bigger improvement in their sound by spending money on a few lessons with a qualified pro than a pickup swap on a Fender bass

I see your point. It's just that accessibility to parts are rare in my country, not to mention more costly to swap/upgrade. But thanks, will keep that in mind.

Depends. If you want a bass that plays great and sounds great, get the new Player Series. If you want one that you’ll have to sink some more money into, get the old Standard Series. There’s no comparison between the two (I know, because I have one of the new PS). They’re amazing! A lot of bang for the buck. The new Alnico V’s sound GREAT!!!

UPDATE

It took a bit of thought but I was able to get a player p bass for myself and I love it!

Wish I thought about getting a pbass sooner, but then these player alnico pick ups are awesome!! They’re plenty loud and punch.

Definitely, the Pick Up in the Player is great. I decided to (must have been drunk) replace the pick up with a 60s Custom shop pick up. Had to change it back, the Player pickups has more mid range punch.

But apart from it's cheaper, any other reason why I should consider the MIM Standard over the Player, sonically?

Rosewood over Pau Ferro.

More traditional p bass neck, over the slimmer front to back on the player series.

If you can get it cheaper, I’d say go for the mim and then mod any parts such as pickups, hardware to your liking.

Otherwise, if you like pau Ferro, or you prefer the slimmer contour neck of the player series, then go for that.

Thanks for your inputs, I posted an update that I already got the Player P Bass, and as much as I was worried about the Rosewood vs Pau Ferro thing, turns out it was a very minimal difference in tone playing live -which is the majority of my workload. I played it stock for about a year and now I'm starting to mod. The bass market isn't as popular here and parts aren't readily available in my country so it's a slow and expensive process to order and import things just to be able to modify (Which is why making the right choice off the bat is so critical.)

What about the Vintera series? Do they use Alnico? Are they worth a few hundred more?

The one I am looking at is the Blonde Swamp Ash version. I know the typical Fender sound is Alder tho..
