Fender Pure Vintage '64 Jazz pickups

I'm looking for a set of these but since they were discontinued as a separate item some time ago they're pretty rare. Does anyone know of a set for sale (not already installed in a Flea, AO, or AVRI) out in the wild?

I've been thinking about all of those but the reason I want the '64s is a friend of mine has the Flea signature Jazz with a set of TI Jazz Flats and the sound is absolutely beautiful. Like Meshell Ndegeocello's Jazz bass. If I can't find them I'll start looking into the 74s. Thanks for the descriptions.

what bass are you putting them in. ive owned a bunch of different standard road worns and if the fleas are anything like them, they all have a pretty similar dry midrangey character that is maintained regardless off what pickups are in them. obviously you can hear the difference in the sets, but the overall character is the same. different than a standard mim or an american standard. a little less bright and plinky.

id use the fender originals more myself but im weird and cant get used to the extended overly beveled pole pieces. the dont look like old fender pickups.

They would be installed in an American Standard though the body is an MJT. I had a Roadworn at one time but I found it to be not very responsive. I had to put really light gauge strings on it to make it feel like it was resonating. I probably just got a hold of a bad example but I haven't wanted to try another even though I get what you're saying. If both the Originals and PV 74s looked the same would you still go with the Originals?

i still do prefer the 74's as theyre a little hotter which is closer to pre cbs. my 62 jazz has pickups that are in the 8k range and are much fuller in the low mids and low highs (while still having air up top). overall, theyre way meatier sounding than the originals, 64s and the custom shop 60's which are way too glassy and low wind. the 74's get the closest in an affordable fender made pickup.

the gray bottoms in 65 until the machine would pickups of the 70's (that have a pretty consistent dcr up to 80/81) are often mid to high 6k which makes the cs60's accurate to that era if thats what what you like.

I swapped out the DiMarzio Ultra J's that were in my American Standard Jazz Bass for the Fender Pure Vintage 74's. They sound closer to the tone I'm chasing and if that's as good as it gets for me I'm happy. However, I'm still going to keep an eye out for the PV 64's and if that doesn't do it for me I'll look for a different bass as @narud suggested. Here's a couple of sound clips that document the difference between the Ultra J's and the 74's.

This is what I need right now. I’m currently being blinded by the boutique Nordys/Fralins that I may have overlooked the PV ‘74s for my current ‘01 MIM Jazz project. Thank you!

Hey @jallenbass - how are you liking the PV74s? I’m thinking of upgrading my Jazz (which sounds very polite and mellow) with 70’s style pickups. I’m choosing between the PV74 or the Nordstrand NJ4 70’s Wind. Whatcha think?

I like them by themselves but in a band setting, they aren't articulate enough for me. Given my tone preferences, I would choose Nordstrands if those were my two choices. I went back to DiMarzio Ultra J's.

I have the Vintage '74 Jazz p/u’s in a Fender J (maple/Alder) – matches jallenbass’s ’74 sound clip.
I was wondering if the missing ingredient in '74's being closer to pre-CBS' is the slab BRW fretboard. BRW’s Janka scale is 2790 - bright.

Does anyone here know how many Fender Custom Shop ‘64 Jazz Basses were made? And what years were they made between? I believe mine was from 2012.

The pups on my example are certainly weaker than say, my LE Precision, but with flats through a tube amp it just sings old school vibe.
