Fender Rascal Bass - string choice

I bought one a few years back and played it at a couple of gigs, but the lack of bottom end has relegated it to wall decoration. Some guys on Facebook didn't agree that it isn't really a stage grade instrument and argued that the stock Fender strings let it down - all I need to do is slap on some decent strings and it'll be transformed.
I have my doubts but can better strings really add that much to the low end ?

I deserve the Golden shovel for this post ;-)

I just bought a Rascal a few weeks ago and I have changed the strings (no idea which type they were, I suspect 0.95 as the E one was quite thin). I have installed GHS Boomers short scale 40-107. Short but not too short. The sound is very good and I am very happy
