ok , i'm not really on a mission here so no worries .. just got a rumble 40 and got it for its ease of use ..i.e. its light as a feather .. but just wonderin out loud a bit .. because this sucker is so light.. ( and i ain't taken the speaker out ..yet .. just to see for myself .. ) so i'm still in the speculation stage here .. not lookin to do anything crazy .. yet .. i do like that its light so i'd like to maintain that ..but if i was to try and upgrade the speaker ??( i'm sure its been done already ) if i was to do it i'm not thinkin of some 300 watt monster .. its a 40 watt solid state amp for cryin out loud ..so no need to go that far out on a limb ..and 40 solid state watts is probably closer to about 16 tube watts so .. what would be an affordable and light,, but better speaker that would drop in and possibly improve the tone a bit ? if thats even possible ?? just keep in mind we're not tryin to reinvent the wheel ..and money is an object cause who wants to put a 200 dollar speaker in a 150 dollar amp?? i'm sure there are plenty of 10 inch speakers out there that might improve this sucker perhaps ?? without makin this amp when said and done a 500 dollar investment ?? whaddya think ??

fender rumble 40 just wonderin ??

Don't touch it. What you have is a relatively inexpensive amp that's suitable for practicing at home or maybe jamming with friends. Don't try to make it something it isn't. If you need a bigger amp with a bigger/better speaker, then buy one. By the time you're finished buying a new speaker to replace what's in your amp, you could be halfway to buying another amp.
Yep if you don’t like it then sell it and get something else.

Unlike guitar amps, bass amps are designed as a unit. Changing speakers is a dice roll at best. It is what it is - a decent practice amp.
yeah no worries .. like i said ,,i like it like it is and i have an ampeg amp if i need more power .. i was just curious if anybody knew of a better speaker that didn't cost a 2nd mortgage and didn't weigh a ton .. i'm sure if fender thought they could save 18 cents they would do it to save 18 cents .. its a decent amp for what it is and i'm not tryin to make it what its not ..but if fender wanted to make it better they could find a better speaker ..of course that might make it a bit heavier .. and it might also keep you from buyin the next model up the line . i get it .. i was just curious what you guys thought if i actuially wanted to go the limit and try and improve it .. thats all .. i play guitar mostly so thats where most of my knowledge is .. but i do like playin the bass sometimes too .. ..i just have to think diffrent if i'm playin the bass .. so why not ask other bass players ??

You said you just got it, so you might want to use it for a bit to see if it really NEEDS to be “upgraded”. I’ve had one for a few years now and it functions perfectly for what I use it for; practice at home, or lower volume Jazz gigs. Sounds fine with the factory speaker.
Well as is usual with Fender the specs they list on their website are not all that informative. The speaker is listed as a "Fender Special design".
Given the combo only weighs 18 pounds, I suspect the speaker is a Neodymium magnet speaker.
18 pounds is very light, I have an Ampeg PBC-228 combo that is 200 watts but uses poplar plywood for the cabinet, a Class D power section and two 8" Neo drivers (made by Eminence). This combo weighs 31 pounds so almost twice as much as a Rumble 40.

A new driver in that box is lipstick on a pig. Still a 40w bedroom combo. I've found the 100e rumble (own it) is the minimum for any sort of ensemble use and then it's pretty limited.
I have a Rum 40. Perfect for rehearsal and a light gig. Neodymium speakers are surprisingly light and sound strong and sweet to me. BTW turn your overdrive knobs full CC or off. Then the overdrive enable button is essentially a standby switch. Good choice. Leave your amp stock.
Fender Rumble Studio has ferrite (non-neodymium) speaker inside and weighs 18 lbs, therefore I assume R40 has ferrite magnet speaker as well. I wouldn't expect neodymium at this price point.
40 watts is 40 watts regardless of the source.
Rather than installing a better speaker , just buy the Rumble 100 if you want to keep it small .
The stock speaker is just ok. Needs some time to break it in.

When Fender designed that outfit, they found the best speaker they could for the price they could get for the amp. I’ve never heard of a retrofit speaker for that cab. If there was one that represented a significant improvement on the stock speaker, rest assured, it would cost a second mortgage.

well..maybe i didn't explain this well enough ..i said both posts so far that i really don't wanna replace the speaker ..BUT IF I HAD TO FOR SOME REASON .. then what would you guys reccomend for an amp thats about 16 watts output ?? yeah i know it says 40 but thats solid state watts .. not the same as tube watts .. i'm sure most of you guys know that .. so if i look at the major speaker makers like eminence they don't really cater to them low watt bass amps .. they'll sell me some kinda delta speaker that will handle 300 watts for 89 bucks ..i'd say that was just a bit of overkill .. yeah the sensitivity would be better at up around 95db and thats good .i'm not sure what this fender special design is but if it was anywhere near that i'm pretty sure fender would give us them specs .. but their silence leads me to believe they ain't even close .. and if any ofyou are usin 4x10 cabs and they came from the maker are they puttin 4 300 watt eminece speakers in there for a 300 watt head ?? i doubt it .. why would they ?? so i hear ya when you say do't do it . but i already said i wasn't planin on it so that was not what i was askin .. i was askin if i had to what lower wattage decent speaker would you be leanin towards if you had one of these an the speaker just went pfffft one day?? if you couldn't get the same fender speaker unless you paid almost the same price or close to the amps price ?? i did find this speaker on ebay and the sensitivty is good ..probably more power than i need but the price is within reason .. 4 of these in an svt 4x10 would probably do the job .. hopefully you can follow me here now .. we're speculatin here . not reinvintin the wheel ..

i have the exact same bass in a rare red and black burst .. had to ditch them crummy guitar tuners tho .. and at some point i'm gonna put tone controls for the pickups and lose that fake boost switch .. all in time .. great bass tho .. had the contemporary model too ..but i like the ignition better .. put a set of flatwounds and its great ..
