Fender Rumble Club

Just thought I would share a quick Rumble review (as an audience member):

I listened to a jazz/funk trio last night in a converted warehouse...drums, bass, guitar, moderately loud, no instruments in the PA.

The bass player was playing a 6-string bass (I think an Ibanez) through a Rumble combo, either a 200 or 500. In spite of the poor acoustics of the warehouse, the bass was clear and distinct and not muddy/boomy at all. He liked using his B string a lot and the Rumble really reproduced those notes with authority. He also did some slapping, and the pops punched right through.

I was very impressed with the sound, and I wish I could have stayed to find out if it was a 200 or 500 and ask him about his settings. I've been using my Rumble 100 for home practice and some semi-acoustic trio work, but hearing that amp last night renewed by interest in a bigger Rumble.

Thanks for that review, Bob. And welcome back Rumbler #168. Good to hear from you.

Welcome, jd, to another unusual Rumble control. Your expectation may be how some other amps work, but not the Rumbles. When you plug a preamp into the FX Return it's up to your preamp to set the volume, as the power amp is wide open already.

As GonePlaid said, that's why chaining 2 Rumbles from FX Send to FX Return gives total control to the first Rumble. The second Rumble is like a powered speaker, with none of its controls working at all. HTH

.

ok, good to know. Thanks for the info!

Kenny is ready to get funky!

In case you are confused, that is a Stage 800. I swapped the grill from my Rumble 500. This way it matches the Rumble 2x10 extension cab I have.

This may have been asked before, but what EQ settings would make the Rumble 40 loudest without totally failing?
Not to be a wise @$$, but whatever you can dial in that doesn't fart out. It'll vary depending on the bass, for one thing. What works for me with my Epi EB-0 doesn't necessarily work with my 67 THUNDERBIRD.

Hi Pete. I have an 800 HD and 2 210s, previously I had a 500 HD but upgraded. I have never found the rig to have a lack of bass or midrange. Was working with my brother this past spring (2020) on arranging some tunes so no real gigging experience (I just jam occasionally) but the 800 was excellent during those sessions.
I also have deep respect for the Rumble 210 cabs, have a buddy I jam with take the grille cloth off cause he didn't believe they were 10" drivers.
For reference years ago I had an SVT and 2 Acoustic 215s that I adored (but sold), then a LAB4 with a Peavey 610 cab that I LOVED (then a long hiatus :)) and this Rumble is right there with them.
Everyone's 'ears' and bands are different though.
I fully agree! I love my 200c and my 210 cab! Solid! Love it!

Well, so much for giving space for others' to answer.

greenie, I'm afraid the answer is still "it depends on all the other sonic conditions mentioned previously" and your own sonic tastes. Knowing the Drive setting alone without all the other things does not setup a definitive case. But even with a list of all those other conditions I can't necessarily tell you the result. I make music by ear and the situational feel, not by the predetermined numerical settings on my gear. Sorry, I don’t mean to put you off, I just don't know the answer, or have strong opinions, to all such "what if" questions.

But I've had excellent experience with my Rumbles and, I believe, many others do with theirs, too. I believe it behooves all bassists in the market with an open mind to try them for themselves. They can be quite surprising since some of their controls, such as the Gain, work differently from most other amps. There is science behind it all, sure. But, in the end, making music is an art, not a recipe.

HTH

Thanks for the info

Thanks to the information that I have found perusing this thread I have finally started to like my Rumble 100. I have always liked liked the weight and appearance but could never dial in a tone that I really enjoyed. Working with some of the EQ suggestions I have been able to tighten the sound up a bit. Between my Rumble and my Ampeg PF20T/Pf112hlf I think that I have my basses mostly covered. Might I join this fine club?

Yo, boss! I got your membership right here! @el jeffe bass, you are now member #1322 in the Fender Rumble Club. Congratulations and welcome. Put that number in your TB Signature for safe keeping. So glad for your testimonial. Did you try the Rumble settings for SVT tone as linked on the Rumble Club Wiki page? Or would you please share the settings you've come to enjoy?

We've followed some of your Rumble journey here in The Club, with some inkling of your bass experience in general. Very good to have you officially amongst us to ... ...

Rumble On!

I see you have the Wine Cellar preamp. I've been considering one. How do you like it?

I like it a lot- also have the Behringer BDI 21. Both are SansAmp clones at about $30... thumbs up to the Wine Cellar for cool aluminum tough case. Thumbs up to the Behringer for the ground lift switch, and onboard battery compartment. I always bring an AC converter, though
Otherwise, they both do the job well adding a bit of Ampeg or other tube-ey creaminess to the dry bass signal. Oh, and you can leave the Rumble at home if your playing a tight space, and have a PA! Load in is a breeze- it all fits in the case!
