Fender Rumble Club

tony, I hope you haven't tampered with the connection(s) between the 15" and 5" speakers. All you want is the overall cab, right? You don't want to even consider using either of the individual speakers, without the other, at all. That can get way too complicated for what you want. There might be a crossover circuit connected in between the speakers to optimize frequencies sent to each of them, or other such technicalities. It should be tested at the point of the 1/4" plug that went into the back of the amp (actually, either end of that wire) with everything else connected as original.
1. The cab is probably designed and tuned for both speakers to be used simultaneously, so that's how they should still be connected, used and tested.

B. As mentioned previously, the 15" and 5" could, conceivably, be very different impedances and power ratings. Their connection, in that case (with, or without crossover as original), would be extremely important to the design balance intended!

A single speaker cab is still a very complex balance between various speaker & cab parameters. A cab with two identical speakers is an even more complex balance of same. Your cab of two very different speakers is, internally, an order of magnitude more complex than that! Keep your work with it as simple, and as external, as possible.

Ok, I took some more photos. The tweeter (5") has a sticker thats says 8 ohms, the 15" also has a sticker that says 8 ohms. The tweeter is connected to the 15" with the red and white wires.

Looks like a 4 Ohm setup to me

Agree... Like this:

Due to the crossover capacitor in series with the tweeter, the ohm-meter will only measure the 15'' speaker resistance.

Congratulations, tony! :woot: Looks like you got yourself an actual 4 ohm 15"+5" Hartke cab there, buddy! It'll draw up to the maximum 350 watts out of that Hartke amp head all by itself, so it must be rated at least 350 watts, maybe even slightly more. And it will not play nice with any other speakers when connected to a 4 ohm minimum amp, such as your Hartke head or a Rumble head. :cautious:

So, you can use it with the Hartke head, but not with any other cabs. You can use the 8 ohm Rumble 115 cab alone with the Hartke head to get up to 240 watts.

You cannot use it with the Rumble 500 combo, since that would be a total load on the amp of 2.67 ohms and the magic smoke, while pretty, could ensue along with amp damage.

But, you can use your Rumble 115 cab with the Rumble 500 combo and get the full 500 watts out of it that way! By itself the R500c is "only" 350 watts with its internal speakers.

You could even run an instrument cable from the FX Send of one amp to the FX Return of the other amp for an awesome 500 + 350 = 850 watts thru (2x10"s + 2x15"s + 5") from the Rumble + Hartke rigs!!! :woot::hyper:

That's all. Enjoy!

Thanks again. So if I disconnect the tweeter, I can use it with anothe 8 ohm cab? I mean I can use this cab with the Rumble 115 ONLY if I disconnect the tweeter, right? Then it would be 4 ohms and 4 ohms?

Also, what doea a crossover do?

One more question...I did run both the cabs for a few minutes before i realized I could have a problem. Could I have damaged the coabs? Or would that kind of thing affect the amp and NOT the cab?

Thank you! What does the crossover do? Why would the ohn meter not measure both speakers?
Crossovers limit the frequencies sent to a given speaker. You wouldn't want to hit your tweeter with a low B. Severe damage! (EDIT: think of it as a crossover routing certain frequencies to certain speakers (the one most appropriate for the frequency range being routed to it).)

The capacitor blocks DC (the battery in the meter), so the tweeter is invisible to it..

For technicalities previously stated, such as compromising the design performance of the cab, I would not recommend that. Of course, what you do with your stuff is your business. :rollno:

The crossover is supposed to send the higher frequencies to the tweeter. With the tweeter disconnected the sound may not be as pleasant as before. :eyebrow:

You were lucky running both cabs before at low volume for short times. I wouldn't press my luck on that. Amp damage is far more likely than speaker damage. :blackeye:

So if I did the meter check myself, I would have thought it was 8 ohms and not 4?!

Just to add my own experience. And this is mine so please take with a grain of salt.

I had this combo way back in the day. I bought it new with a Hartke 210 cab (8 ohm). I remember the combo itself being rated at 8ohms and able to take an additional 8ohm cab into the head. I ran the 210 with this combo 100s of times at loud volumes and never had any issues.

With that being said. I also researched and couldn't find the manual online for this specific combo - Hartke 1115. But i did find this for sale post and in the thread it is specifically asked if the combo is 4 or 8 ohms and the seller states 8.

I may be wrong, but the way this circular conversation is going, I'm getting the impression there is an insistence on doing something with this amp that God never intended. Seems the simple/safe/logical bottom line here is limited to 1. leave the Hartke wires the way you found them and run the thing as a 350W 115+105, or 2. do the extension "thing" with a Rumble combo/cab or C. "piggyback" as suggested by Mr. Dog using the FX circuitry. Anything else is playing with fire...

I no longer have any intention of using the Hartke other than by itself. The questions I have been asking are helping me to understand how this all works. Not intending make the convo circular, but rather to ask follow ups that help develop understanding.

Thank again to all of those that helped me with all this.

Yeah man. You are all good. We all got some good information that anyone of us can use and enjoy. Thank you for this part of the thread.

I would like to recognize @G-Dog for his exemplary management of this group. It has been around longer than any other group with a caretaker. Many others no longer have someone who is as committed to and passionate about the Fender Rumbles as he has. The Wiki pages he has spent many hours on are as good as it gets.
Thank you, my friend.
But, I think I still own more Rumble equipment than anyone here. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
