Pretty girls are pretty, to be sure.

Tonight I'm watching Standing in the Shadows of Motown, and thinking about how I can ape that sound. Bob Babbitt sounds superb.

That's not a vintage Motown sound. Too deep. But it sounds great!

As my La Bellas break in, I think I could get that sound with my Rumble 500 combo. The woolly B string is starting to sound more like the rest of the set.

The surprise in the video so far is just how awesome a job Joan Osborne did singing Heatwave with the Funk Brothers. There's more to her than I thought.

Give me the Funk Brothers, a good singer, and a pair of headphones, and I'm good. And I'm saying that even after seeing the segment with the charming Lottie "the Body" Graves, who was built, as they say, "like a double order of pancakes".

I'm selling one of my (out of 2) basses, and have a new one incoming! Currently have 2 Ricky's - one gets the love, one less so...so I thought I'd give my tone, and playing, a kick up the rear and shake things up.

Managed to score (for the UK) a gift of a deal on a Gibson SG bass. Got some flats on order too.

Hopefully get this for the weekend, and really excited about getting it cranked up through the Rumble rig. I'm hoping - given the Rumble's gorgeous neo-vintage sound, to dial in a nice Andy Fraser/Jack Bruce bottom end. My band's always complaining I'm I have too much treble/mid, so I'm hoping to blow them away at the next gig with the set-up.

More thoughts on arrival!

What if Jamerson had a B string and a decent modern amp? What if (so to speak) God Was One of Us?

YMMV, but I never got the B string to sound quite right on my La Bella FL sets. I really don't like the tapered B string as I don't think it blends well with the other four. Plus, I feel like it sounds bad above the 7th fret, and for me, five stringed basses aren't just about low notes, it's about the ease of having an extra string and also the tone of the B string on the higher frets. When you hit the 12th fret on the B string, it has the potential to sound so much fuller and richer than the same note on the E or the A string. I feel like with the La Bellas, I didn't have even tonality between the B and the rest of the strings.

I was and still am a devoted La Bella user with four strings, but eventually, I got fed up and decided to try the GHS Precision Flats 5 stringed set. Haven't regretted the change. They're not only cheaper than the La Bellas, I think the .126" B string is outstanding.

If you want more even tension, it makes sense to use extra light top four strings to go with the .126" B string, but the standard M3050-5 is a pretty good set, and available for extra long scale (I play a 35" scale). The tone is similar to a La Bella. In a recording of a song, I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.
