Fender Starcaster (the modern player series reissue)

I just picked up a used Starcaster Bass yesterday. The previous owner had it strung with piccolo strings, which was interesting to try out for an evening, but I definitely want to put regular bass strings on it.


I already have a Guild semi-hollow strung with flats, so I’d like to go with roundwounds on the Starcaster for a different vibe. I mainly play blues up through hard rock.


Do you have any good roundwound string recommendations for this bass?

Yeah, Black Beauties are definitely on my radar as well. Since they’re basically DR round-core at heart, they should still have that flexible feel and “alive” response similar to Sunbeams, which I really like for fingerstyle.


I’m just wondering how the coating will affect the attack on a semi-hollow. With Sunbeams you get that warm, singing midrange and a very organic note bloom. Pure Blues stay a bit clearer in the mids and hold their clarity longer, which I also find appealing for blues and classic rock lines.


Black Beauties seem like they might land somewhere in between — warmer and smoother like Sunbeams, but maybe with a bit less high-end presence over time because of the coating.


Have you tried them specifically on a hollow or semi-hollow? I’m curious how much clarity they keep once they’ve settled in.

Any other suggestions?
