Fender Tele...strings thru?

Did Fender do Strings through the body in 1971? I kinda thought that was a modern-ish invention

Yes, a '71 Telecaster bass has a string through body bridge.

The original Fender P bass introduced in '51 had strings through the body until mid '57.

Fender re-introduced the string through body feature in the Telecaster Bass and even later in the MIJ '51 RI P basses (I have one from 1990) it's MIJ/CIJ single coil P bass (Sting Sig, Blue Flower, Paisley) and Squier Telecaster bass cousins. Fender brought the feature back to MIA J and P basses in 1995 where it continues in current production.

Ther may have been others I've forgotten.

I did a 'string-thru' mod to my SX p-bass(that I bought 2nd hand a few yrs ago-as it felt great & sounded good too-stock!!!) measured it all up, got a mate with a bench-press drill, drilled thru the ash body, stuck some ferrules I got off the 'bay, along w/ a 'gotoh' copy string-thru bridge/body -er-bridge & Bob's yer Uncle, or "It worked" !!
Sounded even better than it did B4.
Sorry to go OT.
