Fender Telecaster Bass Idea...

Here's mine. I got the body from Rondo Saturday and have it mostly done. The neck and hardware are the remains of my SX shorty PJ (except for the control plate). I'm still working on the pick guard and next it will all come apart again for staining and finishing. The Dimarzios work great in these positions. Lots of punch, clear, big and resonant. I am thrilled with how this project is going.
Neat, looks like it's really taking shape. One question though, why did you choose not to seat the neck further into the body like the one in this thread?

I'm sure your project will sound great, but in it's current configuration it's going to neck dive like crazy. All the best whichever way you choose to go.

I have to say that I was first a doubter about the feasibility of this project, but as a short scale, with the neck sunk a bit deeper into the body, I'd like to try it out for myself...

plus a bridge, tuners, and vintage noiseless J pickup I have lying around, and it could shape up into a pretty neat instrument, and I'd have the guitar neck I need to finish another project...

Probably because the neck is a shortscale like this, I would think.
If so, there wouldn't be much dive.

Yes, not much neck dive at all as it is shortscale. I see, Darkstrike, you used a regular telecaster bridgeplate. I'm wondering where to get a really long drill bit to make a hole from my bridge to the control plate cavity for grounding. Its quiet enough as is but I would like to get it right.

Thats not mine, I'm just planning a build, this came up in the research on here.

Ooh, that's a beauty! (the black tele) What thread did that come from? It looks like they trimmed down the sides of a tele bridge?

I didn't mean to beat too hard on the neck dive issue, I just hate dive, and I know that an inch in one direction or the other can make a huge difference. I'd be curious to hear a report on that from the owner of the black tele.

Someone posted that on another thread concerning Telecaster basses, it originally comes for the Squier 51 Modder's fourm, and I fell in love with it too! Though when I get a chance to do one, I might go for Lake Placid Blue.:)

Remember, a tele(guitar) is 25.5, this is now 30, thats only about 3 inches extra to the neck, so the dive should be mimimal.

I'd really like to know how it sounds with those guitar pickups!

On second thought, this might be a good candidate for this mod.

-String through bridge so no ferrule holes left behind
-appears to have a slightly smaller neck pup, so you could possibly sink the neck all the way into the neck pup route and still use the existing guard.
-I like this fancy top and binding.

Update:
So I've decided a few things.
1. Telecaster Body
-Black w/ Black Pick Guard and Gold hardware <leaning towards this
-Natural w/ White Pick Guard and Chrome hardware
-Natural w/ Black Pick Guard and Chrome hardware
2. Maple Telecaster Bass neck with black block inlays
3. EBMM Style Pickup
4. Badass II Bass Bridge
:hyper::)

Almost there and getting anxious. Body is finished. I made the pick guard from a sheet of black ABS plastic ($3 on ebay) that is for car stereo dashboard mounting. It polished up nice. SX alder body is finished with Tru Oil. I sanded off the orange "vintage" SX neck finish and cut the tele shape on the headstock. neck is not attached yet since it needs to dry another day

Tru Oil on the neck as well. Its much lighter than the body so perhaps I'll redo it later with a little coloring. There's no way I'm gonna take the time to put 10-15 coats on it. The ABS is easy to work with (sabre saw & Dremmel) and Turtlewax polish made it shine. It's not as nice as the real pickguard material, but its cheap. (I would hate to screw up a $50 piece of plastic and it's just gonna get scatched up anyway cause this bass is gonna get played -its not a showpiece). The other side has a texture and would be the normal front side in a car dashboard. The control plate was also an ebay bargain for $20 with wired 500k pots 3way switch and input jack. Works great.

I'm also strongly considering something like this. Right now I'm leaning toward buying a Jazz Bass and tele body from Rondo. Salvage the neck, tuners, bridge, pots and knobs from the bass and put on the tele body. That leaves a pickup (leaning towards SD quarter pound) pickguard, switch plate and recessed jack. How much alteration is required to get the bass neck to fit in the guitar neck pocket? I figure even in a worst case scenario I've only ruined a $45 body. Any tips, tricks or suggestions are welcome.

Yes, that is the Rondo $45 Alder body and its very nice. Thanks, rollingminority I love them too. I got to use the tele at band practice yesterday and it was great. With the Dimarzios in these positions and Fender Super Bass 105s (long scale cut to fit) the little guy has a bigger fuller growlier punchier sustainier cuttinger sound than the other two and of course its really easy to play.
