Fender Victor Bailey Koa Question

I know. I love the dark tone, but the production models look like complete crap compared to Victor's own bass. Zero flame in the koa top. I just can't understand how Fender can justify the $2500 price tag 
I've got plans to build a Vic Bailey fretless copy using a custom Warmoth body: flame koa top over a mahogany or korina body. At least with Warmoth, you get to choose your woods and you have a reasonable guarantee that the end product won't look like rotten a$$ when you're done.

I thought it was maybe just Victor Bailey's personal bass that has that top. But then why on musicians friend do they have that picture as well as this one? I'm not saying musicians friend sells Victor Bailey signatures that look like that. But those pics seem like they were taken for the Fender site or an online retailer. Which brings me back to my original question, why have I never seen one like that?

I don't have any pics handy, but mine has a a decently figured top. Most other I've seen are pretty plan though.

mmmmm...
While not quite as fancy, the 5 I picked up from TB's Kotzman is quite a looker and plays/sounds great.

That's because Figured Koa is an extremely expensive wood and it's getting more difficult to get it. It's a great idea to order a nice top from Warmoth. I have a Figured Koa Jazz body which is awesome.
