i could buy a classic 50s precision bass but it's less money so more other gear !!

Do you mean the *Squier* Vintage Modified Telecaster Bass?
It has the Gibson-style humbucker right up by the neck, so it will definitely have a muddier tone than any other bass you're likely to spend money on - not necessarily a bad thing, but I predict you'll eventually be unhappy with it. They have great necks though! They feel terrific, very comfy. Put some flat wounds on it and you'd have the perfect bass for stoner rock or doom metal.
The Mexican Fender Classic '50s P is a killer bass!!! That would be my preference of the two, hands down!
