Fender vs Squire playability?

My Squier J is pretty decent, it just doesn't see a lot of playing time because I'm a 5 string guy. Now that I picked up a 2nd 5er I think the J is getting restrung EADG (currently BEAD) and it may see some more play time because of that.

I picked up a $700 Fender J at the shop and played it side by side with my Squier. The Fender had better tone but for $500 more I'd expect that. However, the Fender had a horrible hum when I wasn't playing. I was shocked because my Squier is dead silent.

The strings were a little lower on the Fender and it made playing a bit easier, but I was honestly shocked at how good the Squier sounded in comparison, especially with the Fender being over 3x more expensive.
