Fender vs Stingray vs G&L

Yes, yes i have to try out the bass to see whether the tone is right for me or not. but just some advice please. i play something along the lines of audioslave, mostly like their second album..not their newest "revelations" (but that album is so good...lol) anyways...just some advice please.

I chose these three because:

1. Fender Deluxe Jazz/Precision - Just because its a fender! Well kind of. Of course you can trust it with being a great quality bass. Theyre quite versatile and basically a great bass lol. not much else to say.

2. Music Man Stingray (maybe sterling) - They've been used by many from Flea (RHCP) to Tim Commerford (RATM). Great basses, "decendants" from Fender lol.

3. G&L - Well after the Fender and Ernie Ball, comes G&L: the accumulated knowledge and information gathered from the trials and errors. Very versatile basses. great quality. yes yes and so on.


as you can see they all from from the line of fenders so help me choose. yes and i will visit a music store soon :):hyper:

One of each.

I like them all, Fenders being my favorite for their simplicity. I love the feel, I love the tone. But you can't get a Stingray tone, so a Stingray is a must for me as well. Also, very comfortable to me. And then there's the G&L. Almost Fenderish, almost Stingrayish, but unique. Also, comfortable. My only gripe is the fact that they got rid of the 1-5/8" neck with G&L.

We do a lot of varied materia, from contemporary country to rock and whatnot, and the G&L L2K can get soooooooooo close to all the sounds! My Carvin LB20 w DiMarzio J Models records better, but the L2K can get the P sound, the J sound, the Ray sound, all on the fly and live.

Yeah, if I were recording all cover material, I'd want a Stingray and a fretless J and a P and several more besides, but in the real world, the L2K kicks everyone's tush.

its hard for me to say. i mean all of them are great. popular wise, stingray is the most chosen one for talkbass.com. im leaning towards a g&l. who knows? maybe they'll be worth something in a few years since they're not widely as known as a fender or musicman. yet the fender is obviously a classic. and stingray--wooowww!! its hard to choose! :bawl:

The Stingray is not chosen because it is popular. That would be the Fender.

I have a fender deluxe jazz, a G&L JB2 and SB2 and have owned the MM sterling. The sterling is by far the best quality bass of the bunch. I was looking for something different so I sold it. Between the G&L and the fender, it is really personal preference. I think the G&L is built better and sounds a bit better but the fender is no slouch, and looks great.

If the Audioslave guy plays a Jazz then at the least you will need a bass with 2 pickups.

Stingrays/Sterlings do have a unique sound and are excellent basses but IMHO you absolutley can't replicate a dual pickup sound with any single pickup bass.

Now the dual pickup Stingrays are out there and are exceptionally versatile basses as are the G&L L-2000's. To me those give more sonic options than a Jazz does.

Go play all three and see which floats your boat.

For me the go to bass is an L2K since I like the MFD sound. The only reason I don't have a dual pickup Stingray in the arsenal is because I have a MM Sabre.

For massive low end in a passive bass, the G&L can run passive or active, nothing I have played tops a G&L.

Is there a song that is close to the bass sound you are hunting?

When I went shopping and ended up with a G&L I was looking for a sound in the vein of John Wetton on the first Asia CD. I couldn't get the sound in my head from my P bass. Plugged in the L2K with both pickups on and there was the sound I wanted.

Damn the brand names. Play everything in the hunt for the sound in your head. You find it, buy that bass and don't look back.
