I'm watching Lou Reed's Spanish Fly: Live in Spain DVD right now, and I'm very impressed with Fernando Saunders playing and tone on fretted and fretless electrics, as well as electric upright. Very tasteful and musical!

Something tells me I'll be spinning my copy of Ecstacy over and over again the coming days. What other recordings with Fernando's playing is required listening, and who else has he played with, apart from Reed?

He played with Jan Hammer back in the mid late 70's. The first time I recall hearing him was a Jan Hammer Group album called "Oh Yea" it may be out of print I've been trying to find it for a few years now.(Try Dusty Grooves.com) He also had a solo record out in the early mid 90's. I don't know the name of it. I hung out at his rehearsal for his solo project when I was at the same rehearsal studio in NY he is a nice cat.

Fernaundo Saunders was an early favorite of mine but I just did not know it. He played for Hamilton Bohannon back in the 1970's on a series of super funky dance singlesthat were among my favorites. I probably saw him live in 1976 too when I saw Bohannon in Atlanta.

Great player!!! Although is not a challenging bassline, his playing in Pat Benatar's "Invincible" always blows my mind!!!

That was Prakash John, another great player with great tone. I loved his playing! I'm a long time fan of Fernando Saunders too, I have a couple of his solo albums that might be kinda dated, but have some killer fretless bass in a more pop/funk format.

Fernando's playing is what makes Lou Reed's music palatable to me.

He was also the bassplayer with Jeff Beck for a while. Check out the "Jeff Beck Live with the Jan Hammer Group" album. Cool player.
