FIFA World Cup 2014

Tell you what...I'm loving the anthems. Say what you like about David Luis, but boy can he belt it out.

And in a nice little f-you to FIFA, I love the way they keep singing, acapella, beyond the officially sanctioned and pre-recorded tape.

Chile did it too.

Sepp must be furious.

I agree...though not one for patriotism....it has been really cool to hear all the different anthems sung. That and to hear the guys calling the matches with figures of speech and soccer terms that make no sense to me has been entertaining

I hate our National Anthem and everything it stands for. I make a point of actively refusing to stand if I am ever caught in a situation where it is played.

But yes, seeing some of these other anthems is always cool. What's quite funny is that if you do some digging, it's a good job the lyrics are in a foreign language, as they could be interpreted as mildly fascist or offensive.

As for the lingo....it's no more unusual than the crap the guys in the hockey/basketball/American football threads use.

Speak for yourself...I can't venture into the futbol thread without getting a headache from all the old world talk :p

interesting observation from Ray Houghton on RTE on that attack where Oscar put a nice ball in from the left and Fred shot from 6 yards- was offside but looked like shot was going in but hit the side netting...He said linesman didn't put his flag up and started running back to halfway then when he saw he'd missed stopped at the 18 yard line and flagged.....so did he think it was in and wasn't going to flag it.....hmmmm

Hah, proper commentary must sound like USA soccer guy to those not used to the game.

I...think I know what you're saying...but can you please clarify?

EDIT: Pretty sure you're saying "USA soccer guy" sounds as goofy to you as "proper commentary" sounds to me. Lets go with that. I am talkbassing with half a brain right now, the other half is at work :D

Slightly strange that Mexico's only wide left player is right footed, nice crosses when he cuts in though.

Watch the Japan game? I about lost it when the commentator said "counter-thrust".
