So I left "Ampeg" behind several decades ago to get the sound in my head out front to the audience. Maybe this PF500 is the magic "kool-aid" to bring me back?

LOL! Actually it got discontinued because bass players didn't buy enough of them to make it worth it to continue with them. But it's a damn fine preamp, I'll give you that.IMO the only signature aspect of good Ampeg tone is the preamp. They discontinued their best preamp and only make it available exclusively in the SVT 8Pro. Meanwhile my rig kicks the crap out of any full Ampeg rig I've ever heard, because it has the SVC-PL preamp and non-Ampeg power amp and cab. If your company's preamp was helping to sell other brands of amps and cabs, you'd discontinue it too.

Russell L said:I truly enjoy playing my friend's '70s VR through his '68 SVT 810 at the blues shack every week. It's a tone I can't quite match with my Markbass rig (LMIII + 2x151Ps), and I like it very much. I dunno if it's the head or cab I like best. I've played my LMIII through the cab, and it was a different sound than through my Markbass cabs, but awesome, too. As for mobility, I'll have to take my Markbass rig. I like the sound of it, too. Sometimes when playing the Ampeg, I miss my Markbass.. I love the Markbass sound. But, I admit that the Ampeg sound is great. I've considered getting a PF500 head just for variety (would it tear a hole in the universe if I played it through my Markbass cabs? LOL), and so as to have more than one separate amp to rely on (I have a LMII also, but it's confined within my 121H combo).
Anyway, tip o' the hat to Ampeg from a Markbass guy.
