Im a string instrument player that has recently fallen in love with playing pure bass. my experience started in 1998 and ive played 6 string guitar in various styles from death metal, jazz, funk, etc.
7 years ago i switched to hybrid 8 string guitar (charlie hunter style) which had 3 bass strings and 5 guitar strings, dual output to a bass and guitar amp. Its a fun instrument that Is played in constant counterpoint which I still enjoy playing.
I always said to myself (after hybrid playing) if I had to choose id pick bass over guitar. The low end is so addictive and satisfying, especially since i had taped nylon strings on the bass side so it was uprighty in feel.
A few months ago I joined my buddies metal band and decided to do bass and not guitar. My style is just a bit too "wierd" for a more traditional sounding metal band. So I picked up a 5 string fanned fret and have just been in total love with expressing myself utilizing my jazz experience in a metal band on bass. I can get away with so much more experimental "whack" stuff that was a big no no on guitar.. its kinda nice to be honest to not control feedback and guitar noise.. this is so chill..
I feel I've spent too many years on guitar and not on bass, almost like I was on the wrong instrument .. but hey the experience came over well ! One thing I dont find I enjoy doing is the resting thumb on the pickup thing most bassists do. I have such a strong thumb its fully active and my hand floats using all 5 fingers. Mostly use 4 but pull the pinky out for fast quintuplet runs if necessary!
