Quick update: still love the Nordies (MM5.4 + NJ5S) but the neck PU seems a little 'dark' to me. It's the humbucker....would a single coil brighten it up without adding too much noise?

I felt the same way when I still had my 55-94. I had purchased a DJ5 over the course of waiting for the Nordies to be installed in my 55-94, and I really grew to love the bright/aggressive tone of the single coils. I'd say try it!

I can't speak for the particular product, but the JC 5 HE I'm using are great-sounding and flexible pickups, every range represented and with substantial output. I looked at the ones you linked but felt the JC 5 HE worked better for my basses with narrower string spacing.

Any of their pickups not showing polepieces use a blade, which covers everything across its axis. Beyond the more obvious facial stuff, its possible each has a different magnetic design. The FE (ferric?) probably magnetizes each slug/polepiece, where the HE might be using a ceramic magnet beneath the blade which brings the field to the top of the p'up.
Hey guys, sorry to drag this one out again but I replaced the Nordy NJ5S with a DiMarzio UltraJazz 5. So far it has really helped brighten up the 'neck PU only' setting. As we all know though, the gig will tell the real story.....stay tuned.
Post-gig report:
Dropping the UltraJazz in the neck position changed everything. It doesn't have the 'big bottom' of the Nordy so it has more definition and grind, which is a good thing...definitely more "P-like". It's when blending with the other PU that things get interesting. It makes the whole bass seem more 'midrangy' and pre settings from before go out the window.
Actually, I ended up going with only the back PU with both coils ala MM. After more experimentation, I started rolling off the mids and cranking the highs and lows to get a fairly convincing MM sound (and I'm NOT a scooped mids guy).

Did you have any phase or coil cancellation issues with the UltraJazz & Nordie combo? Or, did the UJ wire right in and play nice with the Nordie?

The UJ replaced the NJ5S in the neck position.
Another update (if anyone cares):
Putting the UJ in the neck position has allowed the bass to finally (IMO) be able to do the triumvirate of bass sounds (P,J,MM). Last Saturday I brought my 'new to me' MIJ J-Bass to the gig and played the first set. Then out comes the Lakie, and with the J tone dancin' 'round in me head, I dialed in a convincing/'better' J tone from the 55-94. With this PU combo it sounds better to add some lows and highs....before, I would add mids and highs to get to a similar place.

It's OK, the tone is what's important to me.I've owned this bass for two years and just now feel like I've got a handle on some of the sounds it'll do.
