Finally tried Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats

If you want a bit more clarity (than standard flats), with some serious bite and subtle harmonic overtones, you would love the Cobalts. I have then on 5 of my 6 basses and #6 will be wearing them soon. Give them a try. I think you'll be very satisfied.

a GC close to me has some 2813 sets.

bit of a drive, but from reading this thread, this may be the final solution for my fretless.

and possibly my fretted jazz basses as well.

I've been an Elixir player for years.

just today, i put a set of EB Slinky Flats (not Cobalt) on my fretless jazz.

WOW, i was FINALLY able to get the action down low to that magical fretless setup.

these things sound a feel AMAZING! 45-65-85-105 - i feel like i can finally say i play fretless again!

wondering if the Cobalts would be even better.

Oh, if group flat sound amazing on your fretless J, the Cobalt flat will produce more "sharper" tone. But, you know, never try never know.

I have a Sterling Ray 34 natural ash roasted neck i never really bonded with

But couldn't get up to sellimg it

I setup the Ray34 with a set of cobalt flats just to see.

Zero expectations.

Holy crap.

Now THIS IS A BASS!!!

need to cancel my reverb listing. I don't think the Ray34 roasted comes in natural any more. I get lots of offers.

getting another set for my Ash/Rosewood Jazz.

thinking about a 5 string set for my Ibanez EHB-1505.

interesting take on these flats.

some of my basses really sing with them, others don't.

and string gauges are key as well.

after some time with the Cobalt Flats on my '70s Jazz (a 040 and a 045 set), it sounds and feels better with Fender 7250M rounds.

my fretless Jazz prefers the 040 Cobalt Flats while my Ray34 and Ash Jazz prefer the 045 set.

should get the 5 string set for my EHB-1505 today.

The Ibanez EHB-1505 with Cobalt Flats is my favorite bass - currently.

Best neck and fretwork on a production bass.

Still have my eye on a Nash, though.

I finally tried Ernie Ball Cobalt Flats on my Ric 4003, and must say I am really impressed (and surprised!). I like bright /middy flats (Chromes, Fender 9050, TIs), and from everything I've read about the Cobalts I expected them to be bright, which they are. But I was surprised by how punchy and tonally balanced they are. And no "clank," either. Awesome.

If you are looking for a string that straddles the worlds of flats and rounds I highly recommend them. I'm curious to hear how they sound as they age, but for now it appears I have a new favorite flat.

I tried some and they were alright, but I broke the E string only 6 months of regular, not heavy playing. That's the only time I've ever broken a string while playing, and the only string I've ever broken on that bass in question, so I have to wonder if maybe I got a bad set. The set of TI flats that replaced the Cobalts has been on there happily for the intervening few years since then, so I don't think it was the bass.

The Cobalts also regularly left an odd odor on my hands which I have never experienced with a different string.

i never bonded with TIs - unremarkable tone and playability for me.

everything i dislike about flats are TIs.

I play two polar opposite set of flats on my two basses that have them, one being TIs and the other being the La Bella Jamerson set. They're both expensive, but I also haven't changed my strings in 6 and 4 years respectively, which is really nice.

I found the TIs to be "like the Cobalts" but better in every way besides price. Before the Cobalts I used Chromes, and I wouldn't go back to those. I know a lot of people are happy with them, but I just don't get the appeal of the playability or tone. The Chromes also went very dead very fast, which I haven't experienced with other strings. Flats with some miles on them have mojo, but these were very dead.
