Fingerboard modification

I have a question for any experienced luthier who would be kind enough to offer advice. I own a Lightwave Saber VL 5 string fretless. I love the bass dearly and love the sound of the optical pick ups. However I am having one problem. The fingerboard, made from an basswood/ebonite composite, is wearing prematurely. Lightwave hasn't been too helpful or proactive in solving the problem.

One solution I would like to explore is having the fingerboard replaced with a more conventional board material like ebony or pink ivory. The neck is bolt on which, I would imagine, would make the job a little easier. But how difficult a proposition would this be? How risky a procedure would it be? Expense? Or any other suggestions - advice you could offer.

For a competant and experienced luthier, this is pretty common fare. It's an expensive job, and will change the feel of the neck, no matter how good a job, it will feel a bit different. Shouldn't be more than a month work and finish time from start to finish. As far as expense, it shouldn't be more than $500, probably less, but each shop has it's own rate, and timeframe for the job, I would look to someone like Mike Lull for this kind of job, or someone who specializes in vintage restoration, as they would do this type of job more often then your standard repair shop.

You could try a fingerboard coating like epoxy. If you're set on replacing the fb, it's definitely doable.
