Double Bass fingerboard/nut problem - help

I dont get up to the lake very often so I dont know Jim
either. Chuck plays at the lake mostly with other groups
that I am not familiar with.

I've got a good photo somewhere of Chuck and Jim playing a duo over in Carson City a few years back, and a great gig tape of the two of them and Pete Spomer (drums) backing singer Terry Fisher at the Sunnyside, circa '72. Jim was from my hometown in the Midwest and my first teacher....

No I don't remember hearing about Pete Spomer's death...I'll have to ask Jim if he mentioned that to me...I call him nowadays about once a week...he's in his 80s and he lives alone up there on the south shore.....but he was working a trio gig as recently as last fall!!!

Here's a cool vignette. Way back when the casinos up there in Tahoe were really jumping, The Pop group 5th Dimension came to Harrahs, or one of those places for a lengthy engagement. They used a Fender bass and like it was "Muff" White-- Andrew White-- the great John Coletrane musicologist from right here in Washington D.C. But apparently the 5th Dimension had this part of their act calling for strings, so they go out to the union looking for 4 fiddles, 3 violas, 3 cellos and 2 bass players....and the 2 bass players they hired for that gig were Snake DiLaura and Jim Aton!

I did their show a coupla times (on electric)...parts of their book were surprisingly challenging. And pretty worn out, to boot...there were big gaping holes in a couple of pages. It was one of those phone book type affairs, open the front and start playing, and when you reach the end about an hour and a half later, you're done!

Great! Andrew White was their electric bass man for quite a while. But what Andrew is really known for is saxophone and for having spent years painstakingly transcribing every one of John Coletrane's solos. He's self-produced about 20 0r 25 albums as well-- a very interesting sax player-- I'd say he bridged the gap between Coletrane and avante gard. Quite a dedicated musician. He lives here in DC..

That might well be, I would have to check that one. He started the DC Jazz Quartet back in the ealy 1960s and it had Walter Booker -- one of my all-time favorites-- on bass. Later, when Walter got the gig with Sarah Vaughn, White brought in Steve Novosel to play bass, and Steve stayed until he went on the road with Rahsaan Roland Kirk. But Steve stayed close to Muff White and in the 1970s started making records with White. One of these, "Passion Flower," got a really great review in Downbeast magazine. And I think that was one of Steve's (rare) compositions.....
