Fingerings

Hey i started out playing upright bass in third grade then in 6th grade i picked up the electric bass and i thought that was the coolest thing up untill like the middle of 8th grade (i was actually planing on quiting the upright) cause i wasent really practicing at all and i was putting all of my energy into the electric then when i went to highschool kids were actually good at the upright and i thought that was the coolest thing so i decided to try to play it again and i was a bit bumpy but i got there and now i got a teacher and stuff and its really cool but i never really got around to learning the correct fingerings so on the electric u never really used my third finger and i learned it that way and now im finding it really hard to start to use it do you mabey have any tips for me?

There really are no fingerings that are any more correct than any others. For you there will be some that are more efficient than others. Remember to always consider forms that have an effect on fingerings, like the arm's angle of approach, how you hold the bass, what's your stance etc... So, many factors need to be considered when choosing fingerings. Form and efficiency are what I focus on. Use the third finger whenever it seems appropriate, not if it hurts, and don't ever worry about being correct in fingering. What works for you is what's important.
