Sorry, I wasn't clear. Even in winter it rarely gets below 40 here. In summer it's often foggy and in the 50s. My example was to show how much colder it can be here in the city than nearby--the 40 degree drop was from about 95-55 in 10 minutes of driving.

I've never been able to play in gloves.
For cold outdoor occasions I wear the elastic terrycloth wristbands that tennis players use to keep sweat from running onto their grips. Theory: On the inside of your wrists the blood vessels are near the skin, the wristbands keep your wrists and blood passing through warmer. Seems to help.

If you move your fingers enough, blood should circulate in your hands enough to keep them warm. Also, once you're playing, you probably don't notice your hands are cold.
Obviously you haven't played any outdoor gigs in the cold.
I have played outdoors and played on the street in the Bay Area, year round, with no problems.

Must be an indoor Canadian! No way is playing going to warm up your hands in the cold. Been there, done that. I've played gigs that had me shivering like a dog sh*tting razor blades.
I've played in wool mittens a few times when it was really cold. If you play a long enough set, the right one will be fingerless when you're done.
Tight leather motorcycle gloves work pretty well. They hold up better. I think you can get a cheap pair under $20
