You guys have inspired me and I have rethought my strategy. In a different post I was asking about what to do if I recontoured the upper bout on my BTB1825. But after seeing this stuff I think the easiest route was just to refinish the whole body. I don't know what Ibanez was thinking when they did what amounts to clear coat after over-staining the body to look like a paint job with grain. I think after I sand down the finish I can then decide if I want to do a different stain, or antique look and a satin clear coat. It will have to wait for warmer weather because my buddy has his compressor and spray gun in his garage and 27° is far too cold right now.

Everyone has different preferences of course, but oil finishes are satin, don’t necessarily require any clear coat over them, are very easy to repair in the event that becomes necessary and don’t require spray equipment. Another option you may want to consider in addition to different stains, etc. - check out BigD guitars’ YouTube channel. He uses Angelus leather dyes to do an assortment of different burst and other finishes on guitar bodies.

The two in this photo were both finished with Angelus leather dyes. These also both have several coats of Stewmax Clear Gloss nitro from a rattle can, though I didn’t do anything beyond spraying. No leveling, buffing, etc. I wasn’t looking for a glossy finish, just something to pop the colors a bit more and provide a bit of protection maybe. The brownish one hanging to the right of the black one is Danish oil only on Bubinga.
