Yeah, I have a Finnish passport.
My mom keeps telling my younger brother he should go in the Finnish military. I just asked him, he said he doesn't know if he wants to. The article did say something about non-military duty though. I have an exception so I'm not required to serve in Finland. My brother's the one who has to worry about it later on.
One thing I know though is I want to go to college in Finland. I'll probably go to Helsinki. My second cousin from Cyprus got in the other year. I speak fluent Finnish, so that won't be a problem. I have family in Finland too, an there's no college tuition fee. Only thing is I don't know what I want to study.
Implosion, you're #6. We're getting nice bunch of Finns here. We're drawing you out of hiding. :p

Go to the US State Department website. I seem to recall a little clause that revokes your US citizenship if you serve in a foregn Army. The same is probably true for a green card.

I have never met a man more proud to be an American than
my late father-in-law. He was born in Tuurku and served
in the Winter War in 1939. He came to Brooklyn, NY after
the war and quickly became a US citizen.

He was one of those people who understood the cost of
freedom. It was paid for on the battlefield.

Sorry for any confusion, I think I forgot to count myself at some point. Thanks Deacon_Blues, I probably wouldn't have caught that. Everything should be right in this list now. Also, I put people in this list as they showed up, even if they didn't ask about joining the club.

Not yet really. I guess you can make some posts in Finnish and most people would understand. We're still getting the group together.

I can't be #12 as I am Icelandic. My wife is 100% Brooklyn
Finn. And my kids are half Icelandic and half Finnish. So I am
the only non Finn in the family.

We found a nice Finnish American club in Eastern Connecticut.
They were hosting an evening of traditional Karelian music. Double
Bass, percussion and a fellow who was a stellar
Mandolin and Kantela player.

Can I get an honorary membership instead?
That being said, pass the pülla!

Ah, I see, father in law. I was up last last night so I wasn't reading it right. You can have honorary membership anyway though since you like pulla. :smug: If you like Finland and you have Finnish family members, then that's good enough. I saw something about a Finnish club here in CT last year, might be the same one you mentioned. My mom would have wanted to go but we didn't end up going. Last Christmas an Estonian in our town invited us to a Christmas church service at the local church. The Estonian population in our town had gotten a time to use the church. I understood part of what they were saying (the whole service was in Estonian) as did my mom and even my dad (he understands some Finnish), but my brother was bored the whole time. I'm not really a church person, but it was fun to be around people speaking a similar language.
Do you know about the Raivaaja newspaper? It's a Finnish/English newspaper printed in Massachusetts I think. My mom has been getting it for some years now. It's a little newspaper, but there's a lot of information on events happening in this area.

It costs $33 a year and it's a weekly newspaper. My mom was just telling me the other week that she didn't even renew her subscription this year and they still send it. It says on the site the fee is really only a donation, since it's a non-profit organization.

Yeah, I think that's the same one we were looking at. It was the FinnFun weekend we were thinking of going to. We didn't get there last year, but maybe this year we'll be able to go.
Have you ever been to Finland? I always go every summer vacation with my mom and brother (my dad gets to stay home and take care of the pets). Most of my family is in Savonlinna and we spend the summer there and at my grandmother's cottage. There's an opera festival every year at Olavinlinna castle in Savonlinna. Then on St. Olaf's day there's free admission to the museums and the castle in the town and there's people partying everywhere. Finland's really a nice place. I can't wait to go again this year.
