Well.. You got to bear in mind that even though Helsinki is the capital city, it's still very small on international standards. Even if the music scene is somewhat nice, it's still pretty small compared to most cities in Europe. Also there are a plenty of musicians looking for a gig, so landing a decent one is going to be a bit tricky. And if you're looking to get paid well, then you have to work a lot. If you want to play heavy metal your in luck. . On the other hand, if you're a good jazz player, you might have an advantage there, especially if you're good with an upright. You can find all styles of music, but the best ones are usually a bit underground. But I guess that's the case everywhere when talking about cutting edge stuff. Being a bass player is kinda good though. There are loads of "great" guitarplayers here, but not so many bassists
Muusikoiden.net translates as musicians.net so there are some connections to be made eventhough the board is filled with metal purist teens. Also, you could visit pop&jazz conservatory and maybe put an ad there. And if you're _really_ good with an upright you might find something from Sibelius academy.
There are also some open jam kind of situations where you might get your playing heard by people who can provide a gig, but that means being sure of what you wan't to do.
By the way, best bass shop in town is called basscenter, but it goes under the guitarshops name which is kitarapaja. They sell mostly used vintage instruments, but if a quality bass isn't sold on private marked, it often ends up there. The nice ones go kinda fast too. Other than that the shops usually sell pretty standard stuff.
If you have any questions or need any advice on where to go and what to see, feel free to PM me, I will happily give advice if I can.
I'm about to move to Helsinki next month so what advices, tips to get a gig there?
