Open carry is not a right, it is however legal in SOME places.
In VA I open carry all of the time.
I also dress like I have some sense and assume most people just think I'm an off duty officer actually I know they do as they have asked.
I've met some of the nicest people I otherwise would never have spoken to because of open carry.
Never in 12-13 years have I been stopped or even looked at negatively.
Va has it's bad points but being a gun owner in the state is pretty nice.
I wouldn't attempt a shotgun though, although I could legally push that envelope, I have more respect for the officers in my area than to go around trying to prove some ridiculous open carry agenda down everyone's throat.
There is absolutely no practical use for having a shotgun in a rural area strapped to your back.

Here in Indiana a lifetime carry/conceal permit is guaranteed unless your a felon ,have a documented mental illness or answer the questions in a way you disqualify yourself .

They used to be really picky and it was basically the powers that be made it a personal decision as to whether or not grant your permit .

There was a lawsuit and the state lost .

Now if your sane and a law abiding citizen your about $150 and a few weeks away from a lifetime permit.

Between my Father-in-Law, my wife, and I, we own over 400 guns. Most of them are antique muzzle-loaders, but there is a fair selection of modern weaponry as well. In "modern" terms, we have such weapons as M1911, M24 in .308, Ruger 10/22, AR15 in .223, Barrett M98 in .338 Lapua, Mossberg 500 in 12 Ga., Colt SAA in .45 LC, Ruger Vaquero in .45 LC, Winchester 94 in .45 LC, etc. The vast majority of the remainder, though, are muzzle-loaders as we shoot them competitively. Great hobby, great topic, thanks for starting this thread.

Lol, that was one of them. :D

But there's several videos of idiots trying to go out of their way to taunt officers and people with their ridiculous OC agendas and piss poor understanding of actual laws.

Then there are also plenty of videos where others have done the exact same thing but handled it very respectfully and actually knew what they were doing.

The scariest thing I've ever seen involving a gun was this. Me and my dad went to a local firearm shop. And there's this fruity lookin guy there buying a gun. It was weird because he was obviously out of his element. The guy was buying the .50 cal bear defence revolver. Really odd. My dad being the social guy he is straight up asked, why do you need a .50cal revolver?

The guy responded with "I'm taking my kids camping and I was going to shoot it in the air for fun"

At this point I'm in shock. My dad replys with "what goes up must come down and that's a serious round"

The brain surgeon replies to that with "true, I will just shoot it at the ground"

Nice.

Big target shooter here. Have been for around 30 years. Not the easiest hobby to have in NJ but I enjoy it. I have many more handguns than long guns but lately I find I'm much more interested in shooting my M1A and AR-15. My 11 year old son loves shooting the AR as well. He's considering joining my local club's junior rifle team. It's a great sport and a great hobby.

Oh, and Pacman.......you suck. :spit: :D

I'm reviving this thread to bring more hate upon Pacman :ninja:

I intend to do my Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) after the holidays in order to get my Possession and Acquisition License (PAL) shortly after. I'll do my CRFSC (Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course) once I'm eligible, but I'm not to sure how that works. The CRFSC is a step in order to be able to purchase pistols and "military oriented" semi-autos (think Ar-15 and the such).

At first, I was thinking about getting a surplus rifle as my first gun, the ammo price and availability made me lean toward the mosin or the sks. But I'm thinking a simple 22lr rifle would be better, 22lr are very cheap which would allow me to shoot all day without worrying much about my wallet. Probably are Marlin 60, 795 or a Ruger 10/22. I like the fact the Ruger can be eventually improved to something great but the Marlins are better out of the box. I'll see about that. And there's also the fact I would use the .22 to actually hunt, I like to hunt partridge.

My wife add I enjoy "Cowboy Action Shooting". You dress up as cowboys(or cowgirls)and shoot pre-1900s rifles revolvers and shotguns at steel "bad guys". It's a lot of fun. Both of my daughters found that long skinny Christmas gift under the tree when they were in their early teens. Everyone but especially kids should know how to safely handle and respect a firearm.

Shot some water bottles and standard targets today with oem iron sights and was surprised as it was pretty much at my zero as it was ... Hoot to shoot and 20 rounds for $9 or so isn't to bad ....

Not if they have been using certain drugs- that'll just make them mad. Those are the ones I'm really leary of- MKE has a bad problem with people nuking each other because they're wasted, pissed and stupid.

I started looking for something lately and decided that 9mm is what I'll get, partially because of the cost of ammo- I plan to go to the range a lot so I am proficient and comfortable with it. I also have been reading about a tax increase on ammo for handguns that will be 500% higher than it is now- if anyone knows more about this, I think it should be brought into the open and discussed. My feeling is that they're trying to make ammo too expensive to buy, so handgun use will decline. If they use this tax across the board, it will screw everyone who uses it for hobby or competition.

I should have started stocking up long ago. DOH!

On a good note, I dug out the ammo box I got as a kid, when I had a fascination with guns & bullets. We had a neighbor who hunted, collected and did his own reloads, so he gave me a bunch of spent shells, slugs, etc. I hit the jackpot! Found half a box of Daisy BBs, called 'Daisy Treasure Chest of Golden Bullseye BBs'. I don't know exactly when I got it, but it came from Treasure Island, had packets of BBs with a total of 5120 in a full box. The sticker has a price of $2.66 for almost 4 lb of pure fun.

I used to go through a lot of BBs. I still have a Daisy BB rifle and a Crossman CO2 single-shot BB/pellet pistol, but the last time I tried the rifle, the BB went a good 3' before it hit the ground. I think it needs some cleaning/oiling. The Crossman was re-sealed within the last 20 years and still holds a seal very well.

Speaking of ammo, does anyone have an opinion on Blazer rounds?

Ruger 10/22 is a great little gun. Cheap ammo, it's easy to take apart and clean and there are so many aftermarket parts that you can use to customize it. I don't hunt (yet) but I can imagine that it's a near perfect gun for small game.

On a side note, the Ruger factory is five minutes from my house. It's interesting to go by during a shift change and see the characters heading out to go home or coming in to work. Some of them look scary.

I love guns. It's a great pass-time and something that everyone should know how to do. Being a proficient operator of a few weapons, imo, is one of the best skills a human can develop. We have quite a few guns between us brothers and our father. My favorites are my Rxd .40 s&w, Marlin 30/30 Texas, .357 mag wheel, Remington .22lr and my Browning semiauto 12gauge with a 14in barrel. The Browning with hollow point slugs is a BEAST. So much fun! I think my next buy will be a dinky little Hi-Point .40 s&w carbine. Either the .40 or a 9mm; haven't decided yet. They are kinda crappy but what do you want for 350 bucks, brand new? They are reliable fire and rugged as hell. Get an extended clip and fit a suppressor on it and it will probably be one of the best zombie guns, ever. :)

i like to shoot when i'm back in pennsylvania with my family at the outdoor range, i haven't gotten too into it in LA cause i got sick of dudes with 30 ought 6s at the LA gun club, not to mention my neighborhood on holidays, i need to be able to hear to play bass and teach my video production class and those guns are so loud indoors and right outside your house it was too crazy

Heck, when I go with my gramp I use a single shot .22 with an action mechanism I've never seen elsewhere. It's like a bolt action without the side bolt, where you have to pull the back end of the cocking mechanism with your fingers. When I was younger I used to shoot that thing until my fingers hurt too much to cock it.

Anything will be better than that.

Believe it or not, I have an old Austrian 8 MM rifle like that. (M95)
It's a "straight pull", it's actually quite innovative - you simply grab the bolt and pull straight back, it cocks and locks into place nicely. I heard somewhere that that action was what the M1 Garand was based (in part) on. Not sure if that's true or not.
The problem is that as soon as it gets fouled with powder residue it's a monster to pull back, you need to be The Hulk to use it!
My brother now owns my grandfather's bolt action .22. My grandfather bought it in a hardware store (in the 1920's)when he was a teenager and used to spend the day hunting with it in the PA mountains. Simpler time back then...
