Firefly or Reddi

Sorry you take it as insulting as i was trying to make a factual statement about you "not you" but yall, getting your sound tweaked in at home.. then trying to make it work on a gig on a sound check..
Where there are perhaps a few hundred threads on here stating soundmen never want to give the bass player enough time to get a sound.. but they spend all their time on drums and vocals etc..:rollno::rollno:

So go ahead.... im looking forward towards your review.

Woa woa dont blow it out of proportion. I was simply pointing out that you are passing (perjorative) judgement on something you dont have experience with. Im not insulted at all.

BTW, I got your fanboy. Wow, didn't see that one before. Almost wish I hadn't. A little disappointed to hear that coming out of you, Metron.

Sorry dude, maybe fanboy is excessive. I thought you were a self proclaimed reddi fanboy. ;) nothing wrong with being one. I am with some stuff but ill readily admit my lack of objectivity on that.

Ok.. No prob.. Truce :)

I went with the reddi. It's what I wanted so I stuck with my gut. Had a feeling I wouldn't been satisfied with the firefly.
Exactly the right move for you. . . This is the OP, who has made a decision and has moved on. Now the thread takes a life of its own. . .

I certainly appreciate all the Reddi love here. . . It's just a spillover gush from the Reddi Mega (love fest) thread. . .

However, there seems to be a very humorous element in the defensive posturing of Reddi devotees, as they choose to dismiss something they have never heard for themselves. . . the Firefly.

That's OK by me, as well. . . I've been working on open ears and open mind as I was so reminded in the Reddi mega thread, for talking about something I had not heard and used at that time. . .

No matter how good the Firefly is, or is not, Reddi users should just be happy with their choice. Why such a need for convincing? We're convinced . . . Reddi is great!

Signed, looking forward to the Firefly . . . for multiple instruments, performance, and recording.

Well "fanboy" implies that my opinion is lesser than others due to a perceived lack of objectivity. And it also implies that I'm some sort of dopey kid who watches anime all day and not a 34-year working pro ;) I'm very objective and I always try to give honest assessments. But apology accepted happily. All good.

Maybe they are worried there is something better out there and they don't have the best product on the market, so they try to dismiss it to console themselves

So what exactly are people looking for in a "good" DI? I was comparing soundbites on the Jule Monique site and in a blind test actually preferred the Countryman ([Invalid or Expired Link Removed]). To me it seems to deliver a deeper bass response.

Is it just personal preference - or am I missing something?

Vin, I'll be the first to admit that the Countryman is a product that's been around for a long time and it's always a solid performer, so I could certainly see people enjoying what they hear. A lot of classic bass lines were recorded using Countryman and Radial DI's, at least in part, so respect. But I think the reamping process dulled the difference between the two somewhat. I could hear just a little more heft in the high notes with the REDDI and Monique in those reamped tracks, but I don't think it's nearly as dramatic as the difference in these tracks I did with the Countryman and the REDDI. Just my opinion, though...I also like Chromes better than Labellas, so what do I know? ;)

Can't just be that we like something, can it? Can't just be that we're giving out reasons for preferring the REDDI over the Firefly. No, we're really insecure and fragile and need validation of ourselves through our gear choices. That's why I've been playing a $300 bass I bought on Ebay for the last couple years and spent half of last year playing on a Micro VR rig. But you go on and keep thinking that if it keeps you from directing your anger at people in real life.

When you have a unit like the Firefly. you may get it to sound OK for you when at home listening through headphones in your bedroom. But when you get it to a session and the clock is ticking ,or you are on a gig and the FOH guy doesn't think your Idea impedance , tone tweaking is OK for his FOH and the room that day.. then what?

Coming from and trained in a NYC studio mind set ... You cant waste time tweaking.. gotta get it done and move to the next gig if you want to make the rent payment

Thats why i like the KISS "Keep It Simple Stupid" approach with a piece of Pro Audio gear. tried and used by Grammy award engineers.. KISS Just my .02

I'm a little confused as to how the Firefly is considered to be more complicated (less KISS) than the REDDI? it has like one or two more buttons, not a 31 band eq?

Besides, It has already been posted by Radial than it is not designed to compete directly with the REDDI, it is not designed to overdrive nor is it designed to sound like an ampeg...

I don't see how a sound engineer is not gonna like the sound of the Firefly, it's a radial DI, worst case scenario it sounds only as good as one of their other DI's and I have yet to see one of those get kicked off stage for not sounding good enough

Anyways the REDDI is still currently high on my to buy list but I'll still compare it to the Firefly if I can get my hands on one before purchase, and see which I prefer more at the time

Yeah I can hear that. The Reddi does sound hotter and has more depth.

I've done it ;) but for the most part, that's true.

Adjustable DRAG control.. And If its an impedance adjusting knob.. it can dramatically change the sound and feel of the instrument... Better for home and studio use in my opinion than any live gig.... and the Low cut knob... Personally , I dont like that.... Do your EQ cuts on the FOH.. not the DI.... The more you put in a signal chain the more degradation there is . In my opinion
The drag can be helpfull with a double bass.. but if you are using on channel as double bass the other channel as electric with active or passive electronics. And you forget to disengage the drag on a gig... Then what.. ooopsss

Its funny to me because is see so many on TB complain about how they want their bass sound to be TRANSPARENT, UNAFFECTED, AS TRU TO THE ORIGINAL etc etc.. you can read that stuff all the time on here...
So now you a firefly,,, something that truly affects the output sound plus overdrive and you wonder why i scratch my head when those same people see no conflict when they have all these bells and whistles and tone altering .. my .02

You might as well Get rid of all the " I want the most transparent" Threads.

To be straight with yall.. These are TWO COMPLETELY different devices... Not even in the same ballpark.. one is consumer market do everything box the other a Pro Audio Classic design Tube DI.. Not even close
